105gr targex, the 1:10 version. Big reds at 10 to 420m. Wallabies out to just under 600 and steel a bit further. Doing 2947fps on average.

Now if Barnes bought those back in, they would be a winner in my 6x45 and your 6mm-204. I still search the adds for them, someone must have some laying around somewhere??? please

87gr Hornady SP were it for me in my 243 back in the day.

Still ok in an 18.5" barrel Andrew? Or do they need a bit more velocity?

Gamekings don't need the extra velocity and fortunately a 100fps difference at the muzzle is only about a 70fps difference at 400yrds.

So if your short barrel is only 50fps off the pace then its probably only 30fps off the pace at 400yrds.

The nice soft ogive area of the Gamekings wont notice that missing velocity

That's why I dropped back down to the 85 grn Interbond. My barrel is 20" but I can still get them going accurately at 3,270 fps. And the 85 grn GameKing HP match their zero as a cheaper option if I need it.

You would still get 3200 fps with 18.5" barrel and the 85.

(Later: I just saw Andrew's answer. That makes good sense)

Ok cool, thanks. It's for my 74 yr old dad. I will always be with him when hes hunting so in reality he's probably never going to shoot to 400. But one spot I'll be taking him 300 is def on the cards.

His shoulders are well stuffed after years of abuse and a couple of reconstructions, so the lighter pills may suit him with lower recoil?

Yes they may suit him better, although the difference between the two projectiles in felt recoil may be hard to differentiate.

Me too. Make a mess, wastes some meat but kills things dead.

I dunno what it is about .243, but they're just a great calibre for under 300-400 yards; everyone should have one... :-)
