Was doing some plinking on saturday using Aussie 40gr subs and the equivalent USA subs. The first magazine of the USA crap was shot 1 supersonic, shot 2 subsonic, shot 3 supersonic, shot 4 more like a damp squib....Of the 10 rounds 3 went supersonic the rest were susbonic with 2 being well below subsonic judging by the sound.
Not good if you are doing pest destruction with nearby neighbours.............or around horses.....

I did a comparative test using different sorts of .22 I have in my stash. Mainly hunting with a pkt of old match .22…. Think it included the American Winchester ammo.

CCI was the better grouping one. All shot to same POi , same distance, same rifle etc…

Good write up and some interesting information.
I probably went through 5 - 6 k of the USA 40gr subsonic last year and really rate it. Out of a 10/22 , cycles well and has good performance on rabbits .
I used a lot of the CCI subsonic stuff years ago and really found that was great stuff also.

Maybe for target / group work one will be better than the other but for hunting both perform well and do what they are designed for and the rabbits don't seem to know the difference.
You are right about the USA stuff in the fact there is the odd round that creeps over the sound barrier so quality control may not be as good as it could be.

@Allgood wonder if that was a bit of the issues with the 42gr stuff in my 10/22?
All subsonic but some mayve been a bit less than others so didnt work the action. In saying that I seem to remember trying some of those really heavy aguila and they worked ok.
Going back a while I was at Moa Hunters and we had somecci subsonic he was giving to me.
First couple of shots I wondered if they got mixed up with some supersonic.
Put them across the chrono and they were all over the shop and even worse out of his bolt action
Distant memory banks suggest close to 100fps diffo between them on his rifle with more than a few being supersonic

We got 20000 rounds of the American made stuff. Down to my last box and boy am I glad to see the end of it. The amount that would go supersonic was just ridiculous. In some bricks the projectiles were just caked with wax, whole hollow point completely full.
Only got 1000 rounds of the old Aussie stuff left which is a shame. They certainly seemed to hit the hardest out of the 40gr subs and shot well.
Have to find another brand but she's slim pickings nowadays.

I think the projectile is slightly different to the Aussie made bullet, the Aussie one has a huge hollow point compared to the US one the reason no doubt why they hit hard and kill well. My limited use of the US ones seems to show that they still do the job on the rabbits but give me the Aussie ones any day of the week.

Great post Mosseman back in the 80s when i was doing possums for a living to have a change from cyanideing and trapping i used to spotlight useing winchester subs always found them a good relyable and accurate round .Its a shame they are not made in Aussie anymore as i have noticed the american made subs are louder.
