The madness over this is nothing new. In a town up our way they had a problem with Feral cats killing wildlife as they do. The SPCA arranged for a group of cat lovers to feed the strays and quieten them down. They them trapped them, ex sexed them and let them go again. Back out into the environment killing most things that move.
One funny story that comes to mind is I stayed with a mate once at his mother's place in a semi-rural town. She was always having a problem with stray cats and had a trap set for them. I asked her what she did with them once she caught them, she said, well I can't shoot them now I'm in town so she had a cover she put over the trap, poshed the trap up against the exhaust of her car, sealed it and turned on the key and gassed the cats.
I has to ask, does it work, she replied "oh yes buy I might have to make a bigger garden out back as I have already buried 27 of them in there. I had a look at thew trap and cover and it was quite a set up.

Reminds me of a story my mate told me. His neighbors were going on holiday overseas and wanted him to look after their pet cat. The cat was fairly old but he agreed. The family rang every now and then to check how the cat was. Which wasn't a problem until the bloody thing died. So he dug a hole in his back yard to bury it. Unfortunately the hole wasn't big enough to fit the cat so he had to cut it in half to fit it in. The next time the family rang, he couldn't bring himself to tell them their loved cat was dead so just said he's fine. Well soon it was time for the family to come back and collect their cat. With only a few days left he said he had to come clean and the next time the family rang he told them the cat died. They were devastate but new the cat was old. That's not the worst part. They wanted to take the body home and re-bury it. "You can't". Why not? Ummm . . . You just can't". It's already buried. They were adamant they wanted to take the cats body back. "Look . . It's in two fucken pieces".

I don't think they will let him look after their pets again.

A friend told me of when his father was a farmer, any cats were welcome in the hay barn but if he caught a tom it was put headfirst into his gumboot and a quick flick of the knife desexed them and shake it out of the gumboot at arms length. Same idea but a bit quicker.

There is a vast difference between expressing an opion and and forcing your opion in such a way it affects a group of people who are trying to find a way to solve an issue that is having a negative effect on a local environment.

The way I read it, if you bring in a chipped cat you are DQ'd from the competition.
    Didn't say anything about collars.
But I think it would be a bit nasty to knowingly shoot someone's pet. And that's coming from someone who doesn't like cats.
I thought tails and ears fixed that problem. I was shooting on a farm and in a paddock, close to the house I spotted a cat. I rang the farm owner and asked if it was their cat, Nikki said shoot it and I looked down, the cat was at my feet, someone pet, just been dumped. Nikki was still on the phone and I said I cannot put the barrel against it head and shoot it, I’m a softie, she gave me shit, but that cat lived another day

I don't care about native birds or cats, but you can't have it both ways, i.e. allow cats, pets or feral to wander about killing if you want a healthy bird population. Shooting cats doesn't seem like an unreasonable solution. If that's too much for some people, then presumably they are happy to live with the consequences?

Mid Canterbury has a massive feral cat problem and any cat that doesn't have a collar in a rural environment is deemed a feral. Certainly live trapping for cats is the best way to nail them and if there is any uncertainty of if they are a pet then they could be released. You Certainly know the difference between feral and pet when they are trapped!
some points on cat trapping done years of it and have taught cat trapping - live trapping works well on recently released cats but when they have been wild for a number of generations much less so and for some they will not enter a cage trap - use fresh rabbit or fresh poultry - wear gloves when handling bait where possible - cut rabbit in four and prefeed small amounts - do it at same time each day late evening best -just nail rabbit onto a tree about a foot of ground -with a cage trap camo it with shrubbery but don't interfere with trigger mechanism - once cat is taking bait set the trap - be patient - with truly wild cats a leg hold under the rabbit and carefully camoed is the only way to go - set trap about 5- 6 inches out from tree - put sticks shubbery to haze the cat onto trap -almost like a lane good luck

This guy is a true adventurer, taking on Foveaux strait and circumnavigating Stewart Island in a 3m rubber duck. And guess what he sees most of down there. F@ckin cats!!!

We have a pet cat he isn't out much at 16 he prefers to be in front of the fire and sleeps on the wife's bed at night. But between me and another neighbour we have already shot 9 ferals this year. Maybe we should have given them to his young son to enter with.
