I am in the top of the South Island and hoping to get starting full-time trapping in 2014. I have limited experience (weekend trapping) but I know the basics - i.e. setting raised traps, baiting, plucking, skinning, but I was wondering if anybody had any advice about some of the profession aspects. In particular I would like some advice on getting a good block (Mt. Richmond or Kahurangi), transport (is it worth getting a chopper for a month stay or should I aim for longer)?
I have talked a little with DOC and it seems getting a permit is no trouble but I thought they would assign particular areas to particular trappers, instead it seems they don't mind if permit areas overlap. How should I make sure I'm not stepping on any one else's toes other than going up to the area and walking around for days in the hope I might meet another trapper in the area who can let me know the situation?
Also, with skinning while out in the field for long stays do most people just stretch out the skins and dry and scrape them for transport. I've heard a lot of people say "chuck them in the freezer" but obviously that is not an option if I am staying out in the bush for a month or longer - especially as I won't have a freezer.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Adam
