    mouse shit for stoats

Some time ago I read fermented mice shit is a killer lure for stoats. At work we trap rats, possums, cats, and stoats. One of the other guys also said about mice piss. Well yesterday he arrives at work with 2 mice that were given to him. So does anyone on here know how to prep the piss. We trapped a stoat this week with a egg, but dont get many, 3 a year. But this spring we have been seeing them (stoats) througout the valley. The Dabchicks on the lake seem to be breeding well, but we had coots nest 3 times near our boat jetty and failed each time. Also noticed Quail on our road with young. 4 babies then 2 then mum and dad with 1 then mum and dad with none. So now we are armed with mouse shit/piss and if anyone has any tips let us know. I work at Waimangu thermal valley and small scale preditor control is part of the D.O.C lease aggreement, but 3 of us there put more effort in than the rest. Whats that smell, its ok its my hand

Pretty sure I saw that on Country Calendar about a group on Banks Peninsular. Looked like they just washed out the mouse houses with water and used that.

No experience with mice but fresh rabbit works a treat. I'd be inclined to scatter a bit of shit and piss soaked paper inside the box.

Kudos for the effort chindit, could try the wood shavings from pet store cages they have had mice or rats in, it would be a bit more user friendly.Good luck.

Sorry to bing an old thread up but....
I reckon mouse piss is a great lure for mustelids. I have caught 2 weasels in Victor pro rat traps that were set for rats and i am sure they were attrached into the trap box because mice had been in the trap boxes and peed in there.
I have just made up a trap box for a DOC 200 that has 3 compartments in it. The first chamber is like a standard entrance on the DOC 200. Mr stoat goes thru the entrance into the first chamber then into the 2nd middle chamber where the trap is located and it gets the bad news. The 3rd chamber is at the other end of the trap box to the entrance and is completely sealed off from the trap [middle] chamber by 20mm mesh, it has to be sealed off as a mouse caught in these traps could bounce around and i dont wah=nt it hitting the treadle of the 200 setting it off. The mesh at the 3rd chamber end has 2 only 25mm square holes cut in it the holes are big enough to let a mouse through, but not big enough to let anything else into the 3rd chamber. In the 3rd chamber is your bait for a stoat in my case an egg, either side of the egg are 2 mouse traps. The mouse traps i reckon are best suited for this idea are the BetterMouse traps at Mitre 10 baited with peanut butter. The reason i use the above trap is when Micky gets caught in the trap the trap closes over him and the peanut butter bait cant be got at by any other mice. Therefore the bait wont be eaten off the trap and smell of it will encourage other mice to come in the 3rd chamber and rhey will wee everywhere as it tries to get to the bait. So you have an egg a dead mouse or 2 dead mice in the trap as a lure plus lots of mouse wee.
This idea might come unstuck in the summer as a mouse body will decompose rather quickly however it may work well in winter ? Thoughts please.

Hell there might be money in setting up mouse portaloos and selling the contents.

Since useing tunnels at trap entrances we have had more success with stoats. Ply wood tunnels or made with cobble stones, downpipes. Dont forget to wipe the arse of said mustelids inside trap box which is pretty erotic thing to do so I was told
