I used to use a Bruno Fox 222 for Long range shooting rabbits when on the pest board (not the official caliber as I had to use my handloads) but man was that fun on a summer evening when the breeze was gone, shots out past 300 yards were common. One was at 416 yards (rangefinder verified followed by another at 385 yards.)
I used 50 gr V Max and rabbits with mid body shoots exploded within the 200 yard mark.
In your area I can certainly see the advantage of a fast 17 cal bullet.
