Thread: Snaring rabbits

So ... snaring seems to be big in Nth America ... and it is seen as humane (if done properly).
And well ... it can't be any worse than bailing a pig up with dogs. Or the bycatch with nets.
It seems it is best to do it with light wire - the dogs/cats are more likely to bust through it and it will rust out sooner .. than using cable or heavy wire

I was a gamekeeper in the uk a long time age, i snared many a rabbit , fox, even rats on a suspender snare ( that’s good fun ) but be careful if their are other species around esp deer or dogs, a snare can be a lethal devise

In the early 70's I used to use Gin traps covered in soil outside a burrow sprinkled with droppings from another burrow. Had an enormous amount of success. Did this on a cockys farm.

leg holds would be better i reckon, theres alot of info out of the states on how to do it properly and somewhat humanely

connibear traps are awesome and humaine and very fast death...but for crying out loud dont put anywhere a child or pet can get to...the ytake time and technique to get them off something not wanted dead.

This is an interesting discussion. I definitely see the appeal of snaring, very grassroots... I spent some time in Africa many years ago, and the young boys in the village had a great technique for snaring rats. The rats would make these tunnels through the long grass by the river along their most travelled routes. The boys would set up a snare with a stick and some string and put the loop so it was sitting vertically in the tunnel. Then they would start 30m up river and walk in a line down toward the snare whacking the grass with sticks and chasing the rats through their tunnels and into the snare. Really good fun, the only downside of participation was having to try the rat once caught and cooked....
