1080 Drop on Ruakumara Ranges - FYI

FYI - I've been told DOC is starting their 1080 drops next week in this area.

I'd suggest you get out there this weekend if it's on your list of spots to check out.

Done by private contractors usually and hunting might not be high on most peoples minds at moment aye? Still not a supporter of aerial 1080 though.

So what's exactly happening. Anyone got any actual info. Mates are taking their dog(or had planned to) at start of April. I can't find anything telling us exactly what's going on. Whether its started or not. Where has been done. Doc implies that block 1 is up first. Mind you doc also have the park down as closed due to storm damage on one of their pages.
    Feel free to PM me.

Needs to happen unfortunately in that area.

If you need answers, ring DOC.

Block application dates on website are the following:

    Block 1: Application date: 30/3/2023 - 10/9/2023
    Block 2: Application date: 17/4/2023 - 10/9/2023

I remember talking to a helicopter operator that was culling over there last year. They said it didn't matter how many they shot out of the DOC land because of the large numbers of deer they could still see in the pine plantations when they flew over them.

Yeah. Heard all that. Just need some realtime info. Considering the number of people about to fly and walk in, it's seem they have a responsibility to let them know what's going on.

Just come from Gisborne Doc office. they are not in the loop. i directed the guy to the dates on their web site. So now beyond the date they have no info. Whakatane Doc is managing the drop so they are the ones to contact if you need info.

It would take a couple of people less than an hour to be updated on when the application actually happened and in what area. Then for that to be updated on the DOC site, and even to trigger an email to anyone who has a current hunting permit covering that area.
It would be a good step towards DOC showing that they put some value on recreational hunters as a resource to tap into.

From what I understand The range has been managed by Doc exclusively till a few years ago, but is Iwi land and now is under a partnership with Ngati Porau, Whanau Apanui and Doc. Protecting the forest for future generations is the Iwi focus and a good one at that. As for our Govt... not totally sure what driving them sometimes to be honest. My selfish and short sighted focus is to have a good roar trip as I missed out on the last 2 years due to Covid restrictions... So the Iwi focus is far more noble than mine, but what’s driving policy and govt focus? I dare not guess or get a label I don’t deserve

Well, I have to give the Doc guy there some credit. He phoned and explained everything.

Pre-feed is intended to go in next week.

    Then tox 5days later.
They'll be working from the back side of Block 1 forwards.
Some average weather next week may push the dates back slightly so expect a reasonable chance of it(tox) occurring early April.
Didn't ask about block 2 sorry. I believe that's next after block 1 and block 3 has been written off.
