Most bullets have expanded after only 25mm of travel in the animal. The usual cup and core bullet will not hold togeather to reach the vitals of something the size of a mature Red stag. Remember a Red stag is closer in size to Elk than other smaller deer and requires a premium bullet if using the smaller calibers. I have shot my share of game and autopsy all kills when possible. Many times I realised just how lucky I was that it died as quick as it did as penetration was not great. This photo is a stag my daughter shot with her .308. Bullet was 150gr Sierra game king,Range 70m.The photo shows the impact lower centre on the neck [a very lucky photo] His back legs are just starting to fold but his brain is not out yet. When approched he was unconscious not dead we cut his neck. The bullet had stopped on his spine and the spinal cord had only been damaged by bone fragments not what I call good bullet performance, a slower 180gr would have made it further and a better kill.

Bet he was using SST's or something.

Barnes or accubonds should work pretty good in 243 really.

Standard NZ hunter, go in undergunned get most of what you shoot at and rave about how good the calibre is.
Get into not ideal conditions and take the shot anyway then chaulk it up to experience.

Can't remember the results from that Tussock (you are talking ten year ago), but knowing Carlson he would be too tight to use a full load of powder

Don't suppose you have a link to your "Carlsen vs Gimp 2003" citation? It sounds relevant to my interests.

It was extremely scientific, and involved:

-an argument about Sectional Density and velocity
    -a 20" barrelled .270 shooting 130gr Federal Ammo (the blue-box stuff)
-a standard factory Tikka .243 shooting 100gr Winchester Powerpoint ammo
    -a pile of damp newspapers
    -2 very similarly sized holes
-no valid conclusion to be drawn from it

Carlsen vs Gimp 2006 looks likely.

I dont know about there but in Aus they're a fair bit more solid than a red, it doesnt really matter what you use though if you stuff up with anything there will be a big tracking job.
Having said that nothing has run out of sight yet after being hit with my 300wm 180gn barnes ttx's.

I shot my first sambar with my 270 using 130 gn sst's and it went down on the spot. Found the bullet and the boat tail was still very much intact. Other projectile is from my brothers 30-06 150 gn win powerpoint on his first sambar.

I practice being annoying more than I practice shooting, mainly due to what my work schedule allows.
    Barefoot and Scouser like this.

My high level of competence at causing irritation doesn't reflect poorly on my shooting ability.

Also my work schedule looks hella lax currently, you should see my reloading bench (it's bare because I loaded EVERYTHING)
