As for rigging,ok probably not the best term used.
Unlike wapiti ballot you can apply as many times as you can afford.
You can make up your names on the ballots.
There is NO verification whatsoever.
So its more so the system can be manipulated than rigged.
I apologize for using the term rigged.

I know of people who have had the same block for the same period for a number of years in both Thar and roar ballots. How is that possible?
My main beef is overseas hunters being allowed to apply when they do not fund the very department that allows it with taxes like we do.
I know of overseas guides making a buck here without any concessions.
Also if there were over 4000 applicants that over $240,000 bucks to run an online ballot?
We are probably funding the Thar culls

Article done by point south last year that talk about the odds of getting blocks etc
For those that were hoping to get in on a summer ballot today, youre out of luck. 9am This popped up on their page.
Summer tahr landing site permits

The ballot is no longer opening on 5 November 2018. Further information will be posted on this page. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Many hunters will be wondering why DoC have pulled the summer ballot off their website. Key NZDA members who have been working with DoC understand the issue is with the helicopter companies on the Coast who have indicated their inability to provide services for another ballot at such short notice during January. They have indicated it is among their busiest periods for tourist flights. NZDA will endeavour to work with DoC to come up with a workable solution for better access.

First time I’ve ever heard of chopper companies turning down work?
Shut up, get out & start pushing!
I agree as there is a bit of rigging or what ever you want to call it going on. As said how come some people get the same blocks year after year and others can't even draw a block. If the odds of drawing are that hard for some it should be as hard for the successful applicants to draw, you would think. A mate of mine entered into the Wapiti ballot this year and was told he could attend the live drawing on whatever day it was being held only to find out it was drawn a day earlier, what the hell is up with that one. Had he gone down from Christchurch to find it was already drawn he would have been pissed off to say the least. He has spoken to a few people over the years and has been told that it isn't as it should be and R93 is correct by saying any of these ballot draws should be undertaken by totally independent outfits so there is no rigging going on.
the police do the wapiti ballot draw. my mate who is a wapiti foundation member ,and does a heap of volunteer work for them missed out this year and a few oher years. I dont think its rigged.
I was given a response that intimated discontent from within the hunting fraternity caused the retraction. That is unlikely to be recreational hunters, most of which- like me would have been excited by the prospect of the summer landing permits.
Blame for Helicopter companies seems to be coming from the guides collectives. It will be interesting to see what comes out in the wash.
I have spent many hours pondering maps weighing the effort versus the reward of getting to some of the proposed permit sites by foot. It was a great gesture by DoC given the politics. I'm very disappointed by this outcome.
This is a little interesting but doesn't change the status of the ballot nor my disappointment.
Tahr Foundation- "The West Coast DoC guys did this with the best intentions, but unfortunately they hadn't spoken to the helicopter operators who would have been responsible for getting everyone in and out.
Alternate explanation- "Our Operations manager and Biodiversity Threats Supervisor had been in talks with the TLG and the HELO representative over the last 2 months going over concerns bought up over running this ballot and we were all in agreement, until Monday morning".
What changed over the weekend?
I smell a rat.
I'll wait to see what, if any, blocks come up at the end of the month for the rut ballot before make a new plan.

Meant to be $100 application fee per overseas hunter
