223. so much easier to carry further being light cartridge and light rifles. Like anything you stick it in the right spot itl stop it
The .223 has done a wonderful job at keeping my freezer full. As said above, Shot placement is critical for a fast kill. If that means i have to be patient and wait for a better opportunity or stalk in closer. It's what i have to do as part of being an ethical hunter.
Im using the 52gr targex and the 55gr hornady 2266 (boat tail soft point with cannelure)
For the hornady i use G1BC .235
For the targex i use G1BC .220
Has anyone extensively tested these for the accurate BC? The targex id like to get dialed in enough to take bunnies out to 600 yards (in my 22 250AI not 223) and the Hornady is just a general allround bullet in all my 223s but i feel the Hornady BC is more in the .205 area from what im getting
Velocity is being measured with magneto speed so pretty accurate
If you can't kill it with bullets, dont f*ck with it.
Use the Hornady 4DOF app with the drag data for Hornady bullets, rather than try fudge BC. BC is never "right".
There is so much noise in the system - are all inputs correct? Before trying to 'true' BC
- actually zeroed, with a large enough group for confidence
- velocity measured over a large enough sample size of shots to be meaningful
- scope height over bore actually correct
- environmentals?
- scope clicks
Etc
Edit: hmm the 4dof app only lists more recent and LR focused bullets so it's out of the question
.235 G1 is about right for the 55gr flat base soft point. The boat tail may be marginally better. I have shot the flat base ones on game and targets out to 500m with repeatability, with muzzle velocities between 28-2900 fps.
The Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT has a listed G1 of .243 on Strelok. There is nothing in there for either the 55 or 62gr BTSP. I don't think these are commercially sold components by Hornday. I think what we have are over runs from factory components.
30 wallaby and 2 upside Fallow. A good day for the .223.

I shot these 2 with the 74 grn Targex at 3k. About 100 yards. They work pretty well - like the 73 ELDM I expect.
Have shot quite a few deer with them - loaded a few hundred for wallaby and once I had the gun sighted in for them Ive just kept plugging away. They seem just as good as the common cluster of 70-80 grn bullets people use on here.
An interesting side story is that the cocky told us to shoot the Fallow if we came across them. So I shot these first 2 and then around the next corner was another lot of about a 6 or so. I had to decide straight away what I was there for so left them and got back onto the wallaby. In the end I saw about 30 Fallow and was glad I made the decision to let them be. Meanwhile on another part of the place my mate had shot 2 Fallow as well and left the rest he saw so we were thinking the same.

Good shooting guys.
with luck you will be getting this nice damp misty rain today..should make things a bit more pleasant instead of bone dry.. the animals will be out enjoying it.
75/15/10 black powder matters
Posted in the stags 2024 thread but here too for record. 4pt shot at 296m required a track and finishing shot due toa ballsup at my end, 8pt shot at 402m. Both using 80gr ELDM, 2720fps.
