I have a swarvo 56mm on my varmint ar, love how it grabs the light- would probably go smaller on a rifle that I could mount the scope lower on though

From the moment you use a spotlight , a lot of average scopes work very well as well. I think that introducing spotlights is a bit out of subject here. I use to spot light with a 2.5x8x 36 leupold on top of my rifle, that does not make it a good late evening optic.

Use a 3-12x56 Zeiss Diavari and I'm always impressed whenever I look though it. The older you get the better/brighter the glass needs to be.

Yup the ole eyes aren't what they once were in twilight. My favorite night scope was my 3-12*56 HT regret selling it now.

Good glass and big objective is an awesome combo. Running a Swarovski with a 52mm and love it.

Amazeballs - but thats comparing it to the x44 objective on my .22
Hey I've been thinking about getting one of these for a while, they look pretty massive and probably only really suited to certain situations and range, what size mounts can you get away with? will they mount with usual AR type 30mm one piece or is objective too big?
Be quite nice scope for doing load tests at range.

Im going from memory here...so correct me if I'm wrong. But about 20 years ago I was obsessed with big optics. Then someone explained that the eye can only handle 7mm of light through a scope.

So that is basically your objective/magnification e.g.

    A 6x42 scope would have 7mm (42mm/6=7mm)

    Or

4x32 has 8mm (32/4=8mm) which is a little more light than your eye can use.

Now a 8-32x56 becomes very interesting, as on 8 power its awesome, giving the perfect score of 7mm....but on anything higher it loses out big time e.g. on 32 its a pathetic 1.75mm which is next to useless at dusk or dawn.

Top rifle, in case you couldn't tell
Running one of them PEPR mount things.
It's a heavy scope. But its on a heavy rifle. The build plan for that rifle was for something I could sit on top of a hill and pop hares off at range - or use from back of truck with bipod while spotlighting.

Gonepro hit the nail on the head. Quality of the glass will give you better or more light. Not objective lens size. objective size only relates to exit pupil size. Tube size only relates to travel in turrets. Very commonly confused.

Usually people of middle to older age can't use the full exit pupil that comes with a bigger objective lens anyway. There pupils can't dialate enough.

    I run an s&b 5-25x56 on my 6mm and a 8x56 s&b on my blackout
Shooting at night under the spotlight , draws in light well and very crisp.
Wouldnt go back to anything less for my night shooting

As said glass quality way more important than objective size.

I have had my 6x24 diavari t for a few years now and the high price tag certainly becomes apparent when it starts getting dark for bang for buck.
