ps guys watch it on TVNZ on demard. avoids the adds.

having watched the first 2 my throughts are that most have underestimated the need for shelter. (Compaired to the last US one i watched bits of recentlly. )
They may be under trees but damp rain mist will blow in and make life awfull for them if they don't get some sides and walls constructed.
Plus I don't see those tarps lasting out a southern gale.
Was good to see that some of them have taken some time to study what edable plant are avaliable in NZ bush.
But they did underestimate how hard it is to get around.
Given deer tracks on the beach someone must get a deer if they just sit still and let one come to them.

I'm an Aussie import, never hunted in fiordland but I've visited milford, been blessed with plentiful rains and also spent wet weeks hunting in Haast.
Gotta say even in on a rainy day back home most aussies with a bit of experience should be able to figure out a fire, we're pretty spoilt in that regard. But getting one going and keeping it going in the west coast bush when everything has been wet for days can be a real struggle even when cheating with modern technology. I reckon the first several days straight of rain making everything constantly wet being an instant tap out for most of the contestants, even the aboriginal Sheila complained within the first episode. The bearded ex SAS fella was pretty sharp finding a dry hollow tree to stash tinder inside with a hot stone, but it doesn't really look like anyone has made much of an effort to sort out firewood and keeping it dry yet, in my limited experience that should have been step one.

All pitched the tarp as an A frame, great for ventilation on a warm day to dry things out but useless for sideways rain and wind... Nobody has gone for a storm proof tarp pitch? Odd. Lets the sand flies come and go freely though! Poor bastards didn't know what they were in for there hahaha.

Looks like most of them are wearing those neoprene topped bumboots. Once those get wet they'll never dry out, I'd rather hunt barefoot with cold feet!

Bit of talk of getting a pig for food, wouldn't have thought that would be very likely though?

Don't mind the Alone US seasons where they put contestants where there are actual food sources. Otherwise it's "Starvation" for however many episodes... which isn't pleasant. Tends to favour larger bodied, higher fat body mass types. The one in Mongolia where the kid outlasted everyone with his body fat strategy points to this. Did I just say that out loud? Cancel me. Or send me to Fiordland. I'd last 2 days before I started robbing the film crew's stash nightly.

I note one of the lads admitted to bulking an extra 15kg before going to have some reserves to live of for a while, maybe not such a bad idea.

Me I carry no reserves and graze pretty much constantly which is why even multi day tramps can be a problem.

I don’t see much chance of a pig, unless a trap is made with deer guts as a lure..

They definitely have underestimated how horrible it’s going to get in a storm, flooding, ripped tarps I bet this is yet to come! I agree Firewood is key they should have stashed plenty. I’d Wear tramping boots but not old ones I’d had resoled

Food will really become an issue soon, possums is what I’d be targeting, pretty easy to find at night.

Routine is key, there’s some hearty people there it’s going to be interesting who makes it, the ones having doubts in there minds they are already gone.

Be fun to be part of it, especially in the roar!

What would be the go to tactic for procuring possums without foothold traps and flour etc? Can't shoot them at night with bow either.

Interesting stuff. Possums are more common there than they are here and if they camped in nooks and crannies on the ground like that they would get eaten by a fox, hence they don't do that here.
