Welcome to the forum rookiesniper. I would think that the deer are most likely to be reds. I know of at least one deer farm down that way that has had escapees in the past.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!

    No deer there

But seriously, if you can get legal access dont stuff it up, they have big problems with poachers and a lot of the farmers are VERY anti hunting and shooting.

As for the type of deer, they are not the breed you would expect.....

We were hunting Maori land, reds mainly.

Although, I've heard the odd Sika is seen in certain areas...

As PerazziSC3 has said, make sure you ask/have permission. I would not like to be caught up there poaching.

Yep heard of Sika and Reds too. Goats have taken a pounding and not as many out there as there used to be.

Hi rookiesniper. Welcome to the best sport on earth, HUNTING!
Kaimais is a bit tough but they are def up there.
Pureora is a good place to start to get into it.

Plenty of deer been taken from the Kaimai Ranges, and plenty still in there...great place for fringe hunting hinds, young ones and spent stags, but you need to get into the thick of it to chase good stags. There are plenty of access points into DoC land.
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.

If by "you have to do a fair bit of chasing around" you mean 'hunting', then yeah, you're right.
