If the Huts 30mins from the road for him he must be going in from the north end, huts a long way from the southern entrance, If its not too much trouble Rusty would you be able to PM the landowners details for access from the northern end.
Would be quite interested in trying to help control the local goat population in there.
Thanks
Yea north end, north of the hut is the best hunting. There are plenty of goats on the steep north faces watch the clearings early morning and evening and I have found them in the gullys mid day. Be very careful in there after rain as it can be very slippery. The farmers name is Dennis Deeming his number is 09 4323779. From the road end the track to the hut is well marked and easy going mostly. The best hunting is off the track, so many times ive met hunters on the track or back at the carpack and they never saw a thing when id seen a dozen or so goats, asked them where they went and turns out there idea of hunting is stalking the track into the hut and back.

Could possibly put someone onto some goats in Taumarunui if youre willing to travel. No promises. Pm me
I have not been into the Tangihua's for a couple of years as I now hunt private land that borders them.
Go in from the north end as stated.
A couple of tips for you. A pig hunter put me on the grass clearing behind the hut. go past the toilet and you come on to a north facing grass face.
Or when you leave the road. after you cross from the farm land to DOC land drop down into the creek, cross over and work your way up to the next ridge to the west. This hole area was eaten out up to 1.5 mtrs high. Then follow the animal track up along the ridge looking across to the slip faces opposite.
I have recently seen large numbers on the west side of the reserve but that means a good walk up the ridge behind the hut and then branch off to the west. I don't know of any public access to this side of the reserve. If someone does know a friendly farmer who has land that borders this side and would allow hunters access I would love to know.
This area sees lot of pig hunters as well. I have seen a few pig myself. I notice often cars left at the start of the track have notes in the windscreen indicating where they are hunting/tramping and date due out.

Intresting, when I asked the locals about that when I moved up here 3yrs ago , got told there was the odd pig but that was all! Nothing like a good goat curry and only 3/4 hr away.
I would be up for a hunt. Not too far away from me.
I went into the Tangihuas a few times a couple of years back, plenty of goats, the directions given by ZQlewis are pretty spot on, get a few ridges west from the main track.
Try door knocking some farmers on the west side with a box of beers, off of Omana Road, plenty of goats around there.
