To practice on a living feeling thing, ain't my kind of fun. Each to their own unfortunately.

I assume you're a hunter. We all practiced on living feeling things to get our first animals when we started out, whether with a fire-arm or bow. Have a think on that.

Now now children play nice, it really depends what he means by practice.
If he is practicing his stalking as goats are easier found than deer, well go nuts
If by practice he means practicing his shot placement well this doesn't sit well with me.
Yes we all have to learn but I can tell you my shot placement practice was on targets not living animals.
I only shot animals at ranges I could shoot well at on paper.

Was playing nice.If peolple have read whole thread they would realise that OP has been hunting 30 years,25 with a firearm so I would assume he's got a few clues as to shot placement. "Practice" may not be the best word to use but again I assume he wants to gain some bow shooting experience on goats . A species of which a big 'billy' will give him some comparison to his future target species, Tahr. I think he's on the right track. And yes,I agree you should only shoot at animals to the same range you can accurately shoot on paper. eg. If you can't consistantly score 10's or better yet X's at 500-600yds in Hunter class at the (NRA) range don't friggen shoot at game animals.

Mate in Greymouth years ago got himself a 3030 marlin for pretty cheap-maybe 91? Also happened to coincide with a broken arm.
Got a bit stir crazy while off work in a cast and walked the power pole lines between Greymouth and Kaiata and up around the scrub in there too. he got a red hind from memory. A comment about still be able to see the Grey river sticks in my head.
Probably just as likely to get one now along with goats too.
@R93 he was from your neck of the woods also.

So he broke the unwritten rule and was poaching north of the Taramakau?
I think I have only ever hunted near Greymouth once and that was with an old forum member yrs ago.

To find this place you must first listen to John Denver 'Country Roads'

So, after having a think, you've worked it out. Well done.
