Yip, nothing like finding a brown spot on a brown hillside for a second time.

I would stick to your plan of buying some fusions. For hunters they are hard to go past. They have an awesome range finder and inclinometer in them which is all you really need.
Glass is not top of the line but it is bloody good enough. They are not over priced so they do not have to be wrapped in cotton wool. I really liked mine.
IMHO they are a great bit of kit to use and apart from the size are as useful as any of the high end binos in regards to hunting. I have a set of swaro el range now but apart from the size I could easily go back to fusions.
After a while you may find you want something else and you can buy a set of the high end RF binos like Zeiss, swaro or leica
Personally, I would never buy a second hand set of Leicas in NZ. They would have likely been used as a target, in a huge circle jerk New in a sealed package should be fine.
Do what ya want! Ya will anyway.

Finding something in the bino's, then rangefinder, then rifle scope can be way too hard if your only reference is "next to the brown bush"
