So the shooter had walked for 2 hours and killed 9 animals, that's one every 13 minutes! Sounds like high numbers in that area.

I've taken some time off work over the last month and done a heap of day trips in Golden Bay and Westhaven Inlet. Seen an abundance of deer, pig, goat sign, from the tidal flats to the high ridges.
So much country, so few hunters. Easy deer on the farm boundaries for recreational hunters. No funding for DoC hunters unless the area has unique conservation values.

I seldom take meat from animals shot on control work. I don't think the animal cares either way.

I should have added that the blocks are small and are permitted for single hunter only. Anybody else on the block is poaching and a hazard to my health. They get a lot of pressure and more often than not the deer are just transient. Not particularly productive but a great training ground for honing one’s bush hunting skills.
The stag I was chasing was only giving out the odd moan every 15-20 minutes or so. If you made a sound, he would shutdown completely so not impressed when some ass-hat starts up just outside the block boundary while I’m waiting in the dark on the bush edge trying to pinpoint where this animal is.

and thats the problem -many hunters in the roar dont realise that excessive roaring will simply shut stags up -especially mid day - to just walk around roaring constantly just shuts up more deer that it will start - a few early morning or evening if nothing going fine - but fine even hot mid day as it has been no

And I've had plenty of stags start up to a roar during the day. So if there's no action and I would like some, I'm going to roar during the day.
If the guy in the next gully (who I quite likely won't even realise is there) doesn't like my hunting style, then bad luck.
    Overkill is still dead.

Totally agree, the odd young lone one might give a reply but 90% of the time you are right. But everything is worth a try when learning on the hill.

Are you sure it was another hunter ? There are farm stags on the north boundary.

Not on the northeast corner. Only sheep and beef. On the second last day (Saturday) when I first heard it I wasn’t sure but I had my suspicions. Obvious as hell it was man made coming from the farm boundary on the last day. Such is life but it put the heebies up me. I tracked the stag down off the ridge but was rushing it. Bumped him but couldn’t get a clean shot at less than 20m. As many an experienced bush hunter has said on this forum, if you think you’re going slow, slow down some more!! Struggling to kick an age old habit of covering big country but getting better. It’s not called hunting for nothing
