Reading some things here, I'm getting the impression you cannot take firearms out of NZ to hunt in other countries. Is that correct?

No that is not correct. It is illegal to send the newly "prohibited firearms" overseas. But to take a firearm out of NZ you need to apply for a permit to take your rifle out and then bring it back in.
Here is the link https://www.mfat.govt.nz/en/trade/tr...re-controlled/
scroll down the page and it has the info.
You also need an import permit to bring it back in.
Here is the link https://www.police.govt.nz/advice/fi...ocure-firearms
Scroll down to permit to Permit to Import.
So, you can take some firearms out to hunt with, but not those on the prohibited firearms list? I'm assuming that would include a number of hunting firearms, but, I guess it is better than nothing.
Years ago, I was signed up for the very first government (CHINA) sponsored hunt for Americans at a very expensive number but backed out because they suddenly decided we could not bring our guns and had to use theirs. The guns were old military rifles that were far from accurate and reliable. They were going to dole out uncertain ammo one round at a time with none for practice with the ammo and gun. I chose to stay home. I had already been to Southeast Asia some years before, shooting someone (US Army) else's firearm and never liked the food anyway.
So you do not need a permit to take your hunting rifle out of the country for a hunting trip if I read the link properly?
You need to fill out the exempt firearms form and then the Police import form to bring them back in.
