    Deer scat

    Hello everyone.

I have been trying to find out information about how to age deer scat when you see it.

I have seen some deer scat that has a slippery sheen on it but have no idea how fresh this makes the droppings. Is anyone very good at doing this or know of a website or you tube clip that could help me out?

Feel free to post images or anything really which may be of use.

    Cheers

Its largely dependant on the weather. Hot dry will loose sheen quickly maybe an hour in direct sun mid summer. Light showers in bush up to a couple of days.
Pick it up. If its warm its fresh.

    Awesome Video Toby.

I would have said 25-30mins old just by looking at your video but I agree the taste test is a much more accurate way of telling.

You boys are Bloody Noisy though,
You got to be a bit more quiet especially when your that close to the deer.

    Cheers

It's a combination of taste, smell and texture...

Alternatively, it will look moist, not firm at all to touch, the smell will be more pungent, warm if you're really close, and depending on what they've been eating the colour will be stronger. Also sometimes the pellets come out semi attached by a kind of film and if you're reasonably close that won't have broken down.

Yip as above. The slimy film is actually mucus and if conditions are dry this can dry out reasonable quick. If said poop is slimy and its a warm day chances are you are right there. Stop for a solid 5mins and listen and look.
