Thread: deer wallow behaviour (timing)

Ben, is the wallow a full on wallow or more of a play area. I see lots of circles where deer run round and around and flatten play areas. Off to the side can be one of those sort of dug out wallows like yours all full of hoof marks where they are digging. First light on those crop circle areas for me

Well, a couple of those hinds im sure i got and they were pretty tasty. The Stag standing tall behind his wallow was the best venison thou.
Took me 2 years to hunt him down, found him well after the roar right on top of the highest ridge not that far from that wallow.
That hunt was a mission and always remember that one so that venison was the best

The wallow is on the neighbours side so I have not had a good look further in to the new pines. I admit I'm not really sure what you are talking about, I see lots of flattened spots in my hay paddocks where they sleep, and one time I dug a 600m long ditch for a water pipe and the following day found heaps of little fawn prints where the babies had obviously been playing on the exposed dirt and walking along the top of the pile (exactly as my kids would have done 10-20 years ago). But I can't recall ever having noticed a play area circle like you are describing. If my youngest daughter ever saw deer doing that she would be out making sure I never got the chance to shoot them. It is already a matter of contention because "They are so magnificent, Dad!!" I will look more closely. As I've said earlier I'm a farmer rather than a hunter, and we've only had deer here for 5-10 years so I'm still learning. Late to the hunting game.
