I know there is a ban on politics and religion, but in my view this is a small example of how values have changed in New Zealand and this change is accelerating.

    /rant on/

When I was a kid the church bells rang on Sunday morning and we trotted along.
I enjoyed cadets at school, did drills, got to go camping and fire service rifles.
Mum didn't have to go to work to pay the mortgage.
The kids I knew wouldn't dream of answering back to a policeman.
The cop might come round and have a word to Dad

45 years later none of this applies.

Yes there were sh*theads but there's an awful lot more now, and I don't think these two things are unrelated.

Some say it's poverty that leads to bad apples and the answer is to provide more support.

However my wife is from Indonesia and is appalled at what we accept as normal in NZ; and would be outrageous in her country of birth.

The average income in Indonesia is 1/10th that of New Zealand.

The crime rate is 1/10th to 1/100th that of New Zealand

In other words in a so-called "third world" country with GDP per person of $NZ 5,500 you are an order of magnitude (or two) less likely to be a victim of crime.

Rates are per 100,000 - source is knoema.com

    Serious Assault - Indo 3.4 ; NZ 534
    Rape - Indo 0.7 ; NZ 32.1
    Robbery - Indo 3.1 ; NZ 66.7
    Car theft - Indo 10.4 ; NZ 1,172
    Burglary - Indo 11.8 ; 1,354

Indo is far from perfect (e.g. corruption) but perhaps there's food for thought around the role of values vs income.

Is that reported crimes or what researcher's think is the actual number of crimes?

I've been to mangamuka hut before and people have taken a chisel to some of the trusses and generally stuffed it up. Lord knows why! It's a great hut and it's free to stay in

Some people just want to watch the world burn
