Cool, my hunt was in Alaska the Wood River, fantastic trip. Your area should have the big 60 inch plus bulls so you will have a great time can't wait to hear how it goes for you. The country and wildlife throughout the regions are great to see, a lot different to our animals etc.

I will be learning to guide on them mate not hunting for myself. Next season I hope to be able to have a go at one as the tag will only cost me 75 CAD as a non resident. I thought to hunt in Alaska for Moose was close to 20k us? Or is it cheaper for Canadians?

I think the current WR Moose come out of the Yukon-Canada in 2014

Alaska and Yukon territory Moose are regarded as the largest in both body size and antler? BC animals not as big?

My old boss shot a 60+ inch in 2007 in central BC
The mount is almost as big as a decent red deer stag

You're not wrong. The heads I have now are hung elsewhere because I am not allowed them in the house. Excuse being our celings are too low, which in fairness they are.

Here's the moose I was telling you about which is hanging in the foyer of Bass Pro in Independence, Kansas City.
I got talking to the door man about it and he reckoned it was eighty one inches. As soon as he found out I was from New Zealand, all he wanted to talk about was our mighty Red Stag. And all I wanted was information about where to find a moose like that.
    Big boy alright.

    This one goes 263 2/3
    World record official apparently.
Shot on Stewart island.... Yukon Canada with a 303. Guy just wanted the meat. Not a trophy hunter.

    78" wide.

Bloody hell.... That would need reinforcing in the walls before mounting. Wish we had them in nz yet alone on Stewart island

So I guess the big question is: If you came across a moose in Fiordland would you shoot it and why or would you just take a photo and why. I hear they don't taste that great so as I am a meat hunting I would just take a photo but what about the trophy hunters here, would the temptation be too great?

One of the comment's mentioned that the air force Iroquois were used to police the skies and were based in te anau.

Is there any reality to this? I had a Google and nothing popped up.

@R93 just put in a couple velux windows she’d be right Mate! our if you put its noise on the ground and cushion the antlers it would make a great tv throne

You meet Ray bet he must have had some great story’s. He hunted with Graham Sinclair.

You would definitely be a cock juggler to shoot a Fiordland Moose.

If I ever seen one I think I would keep amongst friends. Going public would cause all sorts of problems I reckon.
I am a hopeless photographer so I doubt I would be able to get a photo.

I was a kid when I last ate any Moose meat. But I remember eating a lot of it as my old man and mates would get one every season. Even divided up 800lbs of meat goes a long way.
