It’s on the FWF site “The core area will be closed to general hunting from 31st December until the blocks open. See this pdf for more details.”

Jesus what a bunch of prissy bastards. He didn't say he thought they were pests, he was saying DOC regarded them as pests and from that he hoped the blocks might be open year round apart from the ballot.

Yes, you can hunt in the Wapiti blocks year round except for the ballot period. Be aware that they close the blocks prior to the start of the ballet period, usually at the start of March. This next year the Wapiti Foundation have advised that the blocks are closed to all "open" hunting from 31st December to the end of the ballot period.

The gentleman's rules are: you shoot one wapiti bull as long as you are going to pay to mount it and put it on your wall. If he is not good enough for that, leave him. You don't shoot cows.
You may shoot red deer, but find out how to tell the difference - they can look similar, and people can mistake young wapiti for reds.
People take the wapiti blocks seriously.

What you should do is get a party together and apply in the ballot.

Oh, and if you meet a guy in a launch with party lights and a disco ball, a generator, a sound system, and a lot of booze, go flycamping before he sees you. He nearly burnt me to death.

By the sounds of it you got away lightly, with a description of a guy like that you could have been walking funny for weeks
