Some interesting points made above. The FWF try to educate hunters about antler size, but personally I know I'd struggle to tell the difference between 42'' or 45'' Wapiti when the animal is on the hoof? The skull sizes all vary depending on how much red blood is in the Wapiti, so the 2.5 x skull length is only a rough guide at best?
It would be great if the policies allowed pure Wapiti to be relocated back into the blocks to up the percentage of Wapiti blood in the trophies, but unfortunately I can't see it happening in the short term? So if you can't put more Wapiti blood in - then you have to take red blood out, so they (reds) don't further dilute the bloodlines of the ''more pure wapiti-type'' animals in there.
I totally agree that a fine red deer is (or can be) a great trophy in its own right, but in the Wapiti blocks its more a case of right animal, wrong place.
