    @Sideshow
Back in the mid-90s I had the 'pleasure' of getting to know radical environmentalists from numerous friends of two of my old flatmates who were environment and animal rights extremists (I stayed in that house for 2 years).
I was always interested in trying to uncover their worldviews – how they diagnosed the root causes of ecological decline and what motivated them to engage in often high-risk interventions on behalf of the natural world and other species.

What I came to understand was that while traditional environmental organizations like the WWF tend to focus on making industrial capitalism more sustainable to the environment, my two flatmates and friends radicalism was born in response to the perceived inability of these mainstream environmental organizations to curb ecological decline.
My flatmates advocated behaviour in the form of civil disobedience, blockades, tree-sits, damaging forestry machines, and digging tunnels under aircraft runways in forested areas....all direct action.
But this was the mid-90s and the internet was just not used by my flatmates and friends...who knows...maybe like you say, it is one of their main effective methods these days? I been out of the picture for a while in that regard.

In Sweden the animal rights activists damage cars displaying hunting/firearm related stickers. They have staged film footage of themselves being "beaten up" and or threatened with guns by "hunters".

They also host workshops over weekends where they teach classes on how to sabotage hunts, how to photograph hunters and how to cause the maximum amount of disruption whilst staying the the right side of the law.

A few fake profiles set up through a proxy server making threats?

    You had better belive it.

Some RSBC members are just as militant, poisoning water in pens, realising of pheasant and partridge chicks and dumping of dead birds of prey on shoot's. You just need to have a look at the badger cull and the threats to life of those that have been taking part in that cull! So making up a few false email, Facebook accounts saying I'm a "hunter" and then threatening a helicopter company that is involved in the cull so we get the bad name. Yep that's pretty tame from what I have seen.

You just need to look at the trolling on line and how far people will go with that. This is no different imho. Who's to say that a few of these great people have not moved to NZ to carry on where they have left off in the original country. Or even NZ'ders that have picked up a few ideas from overseas...look how the pros get it done!

If you feel this is a little to 'conspiracy theorist' well fine.....but from my experience with antis, pragmatic is NOT a word that I would use to describe them, they will go the extra mile to get what they want!
I left in 2001 for good partly due to what you describe, pheasant beating for pocket money pretty much disappeared down south, fox hunting got banned, beagling got banned. Both fox hunting and beagling employed sevaral of my friends as pack masters and tha last big estate stopped the shoots so making redundant all the game keepers and under keepers.

Remember the 1080 poisoning blackmail threats? And how the media went for the throat of the anti-1080 crowd, calling them lunatics and all. And in the end it was businessman from the poison industry itself who just wanted to get more business for feratox.

Police said the public should come forward with information about people they know with strong feelings about 1080...

A blackmail threat to poison baby formula is a form of "eco-terrorism", says New Zealand's prime minister John Key...

And look at this poor couple, flowers and a card after they'd been targetted by the cops...

They were caught up in the inquiry after police focused on anti-1080 protesters as the source of the threat to put the poisonous pesticide into milk powder. For months, the Kleines were targeted by an undercover police officer, had their home secretly searched and were eventually put through hours of questioning by detectives. Documents show police were so convinced that one senior detective swore on oath: "I believe Rolf Kleine is the author of the threatening letters that were sent to Fonterra and Federated Farmers on 26 November 2014."

Speaking of which, someone on this forum did mention something in the direction of interfering with Helicopters. At the time I just strongly spoke against it, but should have reported it to a moderator.

I mean, imagine the boo-hoo if you went around willfully damaging cars with "vegan 4 life" or similar bumper stickers!

What goes through their bloody heads??
I think most of them are just searching for a purpose in life. Anti fracking one day, anti hunting the next, blm and antifa next week....

They are generally young and idealistic, vegan and unemployed/unemployable.

Let us not tar them all with the same brush.
My experience with my flatmates and their friends showed me that MOST environmentalists and animal rights advocates don’t believe criminal activity is the way to obtain their goals.
However, there are always some in ANY movement who support extremist ideology. These extremists deal with people involved in what they perceive as environmental and animal cruelty with some type of criminal activity. They believe that legal protests are not enough and will never be enough.

"What goes through their bloody heads??"
They think it is an act of love/compassion for animals by putting all animals ahead of human beings and employing a "by any means necessary" philosophy to achieve their goals of no cruelty to animals and total environmental protection.
And this is why animal-rights extremists/activists have perverted once-sensible/pragmatic animal welfare goals by now devaluing human life in favour of animals.

Maybe we need 10000 of these animal rights extremists to climb up around the alps with signs saying protect the endangered tahr then it would become to dangerous for the choppers to fly
