Uncontrolled weeds are destroying native landscapes and New Zealanders are being urged to help root out the "Dirty Dozen".

The Department of Conservation has declared a War on Weeds and is launching a nationwide citizen science project through the Naturewatch website.

DOC wants people to go out and record where they find the plants on its list - a baker's dozen of 13 - in their neighbourhood or local reserve.

"The Dirty Dozen are widespread and common weeds that are threatening to smother native plant communities," project Alicia Warren says

    GOD GIVE ME FUCKEN STRENGTH
    Info to pass on
“Zealandia, a predator free plant and bird sanctuary in Wellington, cost $17 million to set up with an operating cost of $867,000.

“Using these figures as a yardstick, the cost of keeping the entire country predator free and maintaining it would see a capital expenditure cost of $1.67 trillion and an operating cost of $91 billion per annum – as New Zealand is 98,000 times larger than Zealandia.

“The operating cost alone would be 40% of New Zealand’s GDP.
UNFORTUNATLY THATS ABOUT AS VALID AS THIER 70 MILLION POSSUM ESTIMATE

what about all the rats and possums that are in the city's! are they going to 1080 every city? "most likely not" so what will happen when the public reserves are pest free? do they think the pest will just stay in the city's? and wont spread and breed there way back to the bush? they should just let us hunt with our .22 on public land that would probably do a better job! and save a lot of money. but what would I know just another red neck trigger happy hunter... " sarcasm "

Couldn't agree more! I've had numerous conversations with mates about the same thing. My thought is, if your the type of person that would shoot native birds, you would do it with your 243, 270, 308 etc because you obviously don't give a F@&*!

i know a lot of doc land that would yeild huge amounts of possums if you took a 22 and a spotlight in. would make a big difference to the bird life and the vegetation, would find a few cats as well

A slight aside here, sorry. But what is the definition of a weed?
If doc are so concerned about native habitat getting swallowed up, why are they not campaigning against bloody pine trees taking up half the countryside.

Doc and Councils are closely related- "Do as we say, not as we do"!

they are concerned about wilding pines, they put money towards the problem then decide its a waste of money and stop, then change their minds again. in the meantime they have spread even further! just had a meeting with the neighbours about wilding douglas firs, looking at getting a trust together and then you can apply for funding seperatly from DOC and the councils

I know they make a bit of fuss about wildings now and then, but what about the zillions of acres of land now locked up as pine plantations, with limited access for joe public in a lot of cases, and, in my experience, very little bird life being supported within.
If they were really serious about getting natives back, they would be against this practice.

But it generates cash pengy, a bush full of birds does not no matter how hard they say 'its about the birds' its bullshit, its all about cash

I realise this Gibo. Cash and jobs speak louder than anything else at govt level.
I guess the forestry industry brings in a few $$$ for NZ, but it is making zillions for the offshore owners.

Doc are complaining about the weeds but they still take high country land in tenure review under the guise that its better looked after under the government. Now all the weeds like hieracium are out competing the natives like red tussocks when the stock would of kept the weeds back before they were fenced out.

Because-like previous govts and forestry who tried to eliminate thar ,deer and possums, who all basically politely said f..you and continue to amble about and fill bellies before falling over to a trusty .303rounds,the bloody experiment doesnt work.
some one needs to grab minister maggie of the dahlias and tattoo on her forehead in very large letters"THE MORE HUMANS TRY TO FUCK WITH NATURE THEY MORE USELESS THE RESULT!
INDEED THESE ANIMALS ARE A LOT WISER THAN US -THEY LIVE BY NATURES RULES AND SEE ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO ELECT IDIOTIC FUCKWITS TO MAKE RULES TO GUIDE THEM IN EVERDAY ACTIVITIES.they als0 enjoy their lives without hangups ,or need of things like alcohol ,cannabis(oops what funny tasting foliage)) and suchlike.

now can you imagine a tribe of wee doc spotty herberts trudging up and down fiordlands cliffs setting traps for thelast rodent /pest .most rodents would die from falling into fiords whilst pissing themselves laughing!

Just stumbled across Predator Free New Zealand. . Now if there was more groups, schools and individuals getting support with cheap traps, bait stations ect that would be better than aerial 1080. We have some large bush areas where this type of work is successful.
Predator free, don't we have native nz predators.
Also if you are around Rotorua anytime especially if you have kids take a dawn walk at the Kaharoa kokako trust, its not touristy just a bush walk, you may not see them but you will hear them. They do use 1080 in bait stations for about a month just before breeding season.
