Nothing confusing about that. Years ago before numerious 1080 drops areas had heaps of possums, rats and heaps of birds. After 1080 the same areas had little to no possums, still rats and fuck all birds.
Private blocks that have refused 1080 drops or poisons still have plenty of possums, rats etc but have birds in numbers 3 times that of a 1080 block a few kms down the road. Thats real facts, ive seen it , been there done that so i have always believed 1080 is doing more harm than good in many places.
A real eye opener will be when we head back to the cobb valley after the second 1080 drop.
After going there for the first time earlier this year after its first 1080 drop the bird numbers were huge compared to the dead zones im used to hunting. Of cause what were the bird numbers like before the drop?
Nearly certainly at least as much if not more as it was to short a time frame after the drop for any reduction in pest numbers to have a effect on bird numbers. (only be deaths due to 1080) But pass experience in 1080 areas that get done more than once the bird numbers drop right off and never recover from the pre 1080 . Im betting without a doubt the bird song will be greatly reduced in the COBB from this second drop, maybe never to recover if continued drops of 1080 carry on as part of the next wave of BS that is pest free NZ

    @Woody
    Impressive missive mate.
The questions you're raising, are questions that our 'independent' press should be asking!
Not one TV/radio/ newspaper interviewer has raised these very concerning points - other than to pat JK on the back for his 'green' posture.
The bounty for pests used to work back in the day for deer, possum and pigs.
When the bounty was withdrawn, due to increasing costs, this money appears to have been diverted into 1080 application.
Now, as previously pointed out, the public with all the increasing costs of 'surviving' in our modern environment, are being called upon to fund a scheme that reeks of 'payback' for support of a select group of pollies.
In view of the already fierce opposition from owners/breeders/lovers of the 'humble, non-violent moggy' to being classified in the predator group, it's up to the of us who have seen, heard about or know of the damage committed by predators - some of whom I personally was unaware are such - to start sending photos of the cannibalism exhibited by rats, hogs, mice, etc., to our uneducated press.
There are some fine examples of photos within this, and other forums and elsewhere within the hunting/fishing/shooting community, that need to be forwarded - post haste - to raise awareness of what you all know.
    Cheers

Well WallyR, when it comes to 1080 theres no índependent press". Im sure the word 1080 must be banned on main stream tv. News items will hardly ever mention it anymore, even the word poison seems to be a hard word to say in any news item to do with pest control. Questions that are put to MPs or the PM are very carefully worded and are very unlikely to ask the hard questions, only postive feedback is aired.
One would think with such a debate on 1080, pest control and two different sides going hammer and tongs against each other they be plenty of Docos, news stories for and against if it was truely freedom of speech on the airwaves. I dont see it, unless its a postive take on it without mentioning the word 1080, poison, anything negitive its sweep under the carpet.

It's a bit like "man made global warming" the media never say anything negative about the so called theory's, except Leighton Smith.

I wasn't confused, but the "believers" of 1080 poison would be if honesty prevailed. Spent plenty of time years ago in area's where 1080 wasn't used among the birds and possums.

I've taken out the politicians names...............

    Spokesperson for Outdoor Recreation Dick
    28 JULY 2016
MINISTER SERIOUSLY MISLEADING PUBLIC OVER 1080
Conservation Minister is totally ignoring the serious risks of using 1080 in her plan to make New Zealand predator free by 2050.
“She is so out of touch she once stated in Parliament that there is more 1080 in a cup of tea than in a poison bait which is totally absurd,” New Zealand First Spokesman for Outdoor Recreation Dick says.
“The fact is the World Health Organisation lists Compound 1080 as a Class 1 deadly poison and they don’t do that with tea.
“Her reckless approval of 1080 is unfortunately placing the health of New Zealanders, and dogs at serious risk.
    “She claims:
    1. ‘1080 breaks down in 48 hours, and keep dogs out of the 1080 areas for about 2 days.’
FACT: Dogs are susceptible to 1080. Her own department warns baits can remain dangerous for weeks and in poisoned carcasses for months.
    2. ‘1080 is safe because it is ‘plant-based’.’
FACT: The only plant that has any connection with 1080 is the Tull Chemicals plant in Alabama. Compound 1080 is a synthetic toxin manufactured from Fluoroacetate which is plant based. They replicate/synthesise the plant toxin and add sodium to it to make 1080.
    3. ‘1080 is safe because it is ‘water soluble’.’
FACT: Water solubility is what makes 1080 dangerous. It hastens the digestive uptake of the poison by birds and animals and other susceptible air-breathing species and allows the toxin to spread very fast in the environment. When added to water, the toxic fluoroacetate molecule remains intact. The manufacturer’s instructions specifically exclude the use of 1080 in or near waterways.
    4. ‘There is more 1080 in a cup of tea.’
FACT: Fluoroacetate (not 1080) is in some teas, of which, depending on the tea, a person would have to drink between 800 and 5000 cups at one sitting to reach a dangerous dose level.
“All of this shows that if the minister and the government think it is right to tell New Zealand that 1080 is safe then they have no right to be running this country,” Mr Dick says.

Be interested to know what methods you use to conduct this monitoring and keen to see the numbers that no doubt support such bold statements

    • $28 million new company to identify large pest control programmes and attract private investment

The Government has revealed what it calls the most ambitious conservation project in the world - exterminating all rats, stoats and possums in New Zealand before 2050.

These predators are now costing New Zealand's economy and primary sector $3.3 billion a year, Prime Minister John Key said this afternoon.

In response, the Government will set up a new joint venture company, Predator Free New Zealand Limited, at a cost of $28 million over four years, to identify large-scale pest eradication projects and attract private investment to boost their reach.

For every $2 put towards pest control projects by councils and the private sector, the Government will contribute another $1.
How does it go again? YEAH RIGHT. Maggie the gardener Barry should know all about it.

less than 1 bird per hectare of nz per year which seems fairly reasonable but go on

I don't like the absolute numbers with no source cited

Of course I could [cite source] baseless assertions in this thread for a couple of hours, so.

Ya thought about how many birds per hectare are killed with 1080 and brodifacoum and pindone?

And how many more get eaten by prey switching cats rats and stoat?
