War on pests avoids targetting pets and dinner | Radio New Zealand News

This chap his waded in with his two cents and raised the stakes one dollar!

He goes on to name all NZ game animals and freshwater game fish. Ok some out there may not see trout and salmon as game fish but they are

Now after reading this drivel i find he has researched case studies for both the Department of Conservation and OSPRI. Now i smell a rat.Note; BSA has also taken OSPRI to task for false claims.

I have decided that I am going to open a online shop selling "Rose Tinted Glasses". I reckon I could be a millionare in months

Na it is the perfect business, if you had money to invest you would be a mug not to.
drown the wildreness in it killing native birds and creating rat plauges and the birds will never recover and you will never get rid of every predator needing more and more 1080 every year untill we are faced with a choice, schools roads and hospitals or 1080.

Im going to look into another mortage and investing in 1080 production.

Fair enough, at least this guy is laying his cards on the table. I don't agree, but like the honesty. I'll be honest, if I had to be a choice, I'd rather have animals to hunt than native birds in the trees.

Nice article (not). The biggest elephant in the room is that it's us HUMANS we are the biggest pest.

The writer should think about that one. 1080 is not going to achieve anything in the long term except maybe delay damage in some areas. Went past a dead possum in Hillcrest today (Auckland). I have taped them in my backyard also. I cant see them using 1080 in suburban Auckland so there will always be a reserve of animals to re-invade areas. There is however some new electronic traps that can reset ans keep killing for months. But even the people I know who have worked on this for years are talking about achieving kill off to minimal numbers only. The electronic traps will act as a sort of fence to keep significant numbers from coming back.

This is a political stunt, nothing more.

    Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

It's a pretty big claim to suggest that the 1080 industry silences:
1)All politicians who're always looking expose corruption in the competition
2)DOC, who're full of people that truly care about the environment.
    3)Forest & Bird
    4) A multitude of scientists

Where's the money trail? This is a tiny poison industry and we're hardly a corrupt nation.

At least you are honest, I'd be interested to see what would happen to the anti brigade if they developed 1080 so the deer repellent was 100% effective.

It would still be a hideously cruel and indiscriminately killing poison the use of which is entirely inconsistent with this country's clean green image.

The same could easily be said about recreational hunting.

Considering how much work went into and still goes into keeping small coastal islands predator free, I'm thinking that the 2 main islands might be just a tiny bit too big a job.....

They've lied to themselves so long about caring that it kills imaginary birds that they've started to believe it.

    Predator-Free NZ Could Be Pandora

Predator-Free NZ Could Be Pandora’s Box
    Tuesday, 26 July 2016, 9:52 am
Press Release: New Zealand First Party

    Richard Prosser MP

Spokesperson for Primary Industries and Outdoor Recreation
    26 JULY 2016

Predator-Free NZ Could Be Pandora’s Box

New Zealand First says the government’s plan for a 100% predator-free New Zealand by 2050 may be commendably motivated, but has the potential to derail into the worst unintentional ecological blunder of modern times.

Primary Industries and Outdoor Recreation Spokesperson Richard Prosser says while the plan may be noble in intent, many of the claims it is based on are unsubstantiated or supported by science that is equivocal.

“Some of the shortcomings of this proposal are obvious, while others are revealed as potential unintended consequences that the government has not even considered,” Mr Prosser says.

“Cats are not even mentioned, despite being an introduced predator and a major one at that – is this because the government knows that exterminating all cats from New Zealand is electorally impossible as well as physically impossible?

“Nobody wants our native species being decimated by introduced predators but it has to be remembered that our birds and lizards have coexisted alongside ferrets and stoats for more than 130 years, cats for 200 years, and rats for more than 800 years, yet we still have birds and lizards. The rat is the preferred food of the stoat, which only switches to preying on birds when rat populations are depleted.

“There is now an uneasy equilibrium, albeit an artificial one, out there that we run the risk of upsetting if the task of mammal control is not very carefully planned and executed.

“No human society in history has succeeded in exterminating the rat, and it is highly unlikely that we will be the first. The intention is so unrealistic as to be bordering on the irrational.

“Possums are primarily herbivores. Few studies exist that document the contribution of birds and eggs to the possum’s diet, but those that do indicate bird material to be less than 0.5%. In some areas, thanks to diminished numbers of birds such as the kereru, possums may be the only agents capable of spreading large tree seeds.

“The myth that possums are the major cause of TB in cattle has been debunked by figures that the government itself has supplied in response to our questions. But we do know that poisoning operations aimed at possums result in the direct and indirect deaths of many endangered birds.

“It is telling that bird life flourishes around town fringes, where cats and rats and stoats abound but where aerial poisons are not used.

“New Zealand First wholeheartedly supports trapping initiatives and the development of new technologies, but we are very concerned that the government’s approach will be to keep on increasing the use of poisons with systemic toxicity, threatening not only the species they claim to be trying to protect, but indeed our clean green image itself, in the pursuit of a plainly unattainable goal.

“Controlling pests down to sustainable levels, and increasing resourcing for larger, more numerous, and better-protected sanctuaries, is sensible and probably achievable. Imagining that we can exterminate cats and rats from the entirety of New Zealand is very probably neither of those things.

“Further imagining that a profit-driven private enterprise pest control company would successfully exterminate the very source of its income is naïve at best, and we have to question the government’s motivation and indeed rationale in choosing this model,” says Mr Prosser.

Minister Seriously Misleading Public Over 1080 | Scoop News

Minister Seriously Misleading Public Over 1080
    Thursday, 28 July 2016, 1:39 pm
Press Release: New Zealand First Party

    Richard Prosser MP

    Spokesperson for Outdoor Recreation
    28 JULY 2016

Minister Seriously Misleading Public Over 1080

Conservation Minister Maggie Barrie is totally ignoring the serious risks of using 1080 in her plan to make New Zealand predator free by 2050.

“She is so out of touch she once stated in Parliament that there is more 1080 in a cup of tea than in a poison bait which is totally absurd,” New Zealand First Spokesman for Outdoor Recreation Richard Prosser says.

“The fact is the World Health Organisation lists Compound 1080 as a Class 1 deadly poison and they don’t do that with tea.

“Her reckless approval of 1080 is unfortunately placing the health of New Zealanders, and dogs at serious risk.

    “She claims:

    1. ‘1080 breaks down in 48 hours, and keep dogs out of the 1080 areas for about 2 days.’

FACT: Dogs are susceptible to 1080. Her own department warns baits can remain dangerous for weeks and in poisoned carcasses for months.

    2. ‘1080 is safe because it is ‘plant-based’.’

FACT: The only plant that has any connection with 1080 is the Tull Chemicals plant in Alabama. Compound 1080 is a synthetic toxin manufactured from Fluoroacetate which is plant based. They replicate/synthesise the plant toxin and add sodium to it to make 1080.

    3. ‘1080 is safe because it is ‘water soluble’.’

FACT: Water solubility is what makes 1080 dangerous. It hastens the digestive uptake of the poison by birds and animals and other susceptible air-breathing species and allows the toxin to spread very fast in the environment. When added to water, the toxic fluoroacetate molecule remains intact. The manufacturer’s instructions specifically exclude the use of 1080 in or near waterways.

    4. ‘There is more 1080 in a cup of tea.’

FACT: Fluoroacetate (not 1080) is in some teas, of which, depending on the tea, a person would have to drink between 800 and 5000 cups at one sitting to reach a dangerous dose level.

“All of this shows that if the minister and the government think it is right to tell New Zealand that 1080 is safe then they have no right to be running this country,” Mr Prosser says.
