Yeah we didnt see any in Mangamingi, but the two years earlier we saw 11 in 4 days and shot 2. Thats why we went back.

My mate reckons he heard one "heehawww", do Sika make that noise outside of the roar?

Helisika said a few got taken from North Arm the same week we were in, that could be worth a look Roy.

If in a party of four for example....

One deer per hunter so four deer, and one per the group. So in total five deer.

If you just chase numbers, you will never get them.
Get to know a block, where they are when, and learn their habits.
Too many people wander around the tussock expecting them to jump up at their feet like hares, 'cos two weeks ago someone else saw a few.

Not meaning you WW, just generalising.

Thats the best advice. Sika are creatures of habit.

Exactly, I agree. We planned to go back to that block last year as we liked the block, knew the spots to go to and where to hunt. But it was booked at the time we wanted to go in. We booked it for this year and hit the same spots we had success in, tried glassing, bush stalking, and got up to the tops. Nothing seen this year. But thats how it goes. We put in a lot of effort in that block, it was just shame to not even see one.
I would go back there though, I like the block.

So what did you guys think about the "heehaw" call in a early spring? Do Sika make that call or just in the roar?

I shot an 8 point Jap in Late velvet February last year - got him at the top end of Mangtonoka 2 block - he was feeding along the edge of a clearing lightly meeeueewing squeeking and talking to himself - maybe it was something similar to this ?

This is the only jap ive shot so far, looking forward to going back to try one of these spots

Yeah it was interesting about the "heehaw", only ever heard them whistle really.

In Mangamingi Rookie? Good stuff. Yeah spent alot time time in the usual places but just no luck. I will go back there as I like that block.
Was in Gold Creek last year and we saw a few there and got 2. Not a bad spot also.

It will be interesting to see if the numbers/heads improve over time in those blocks that are now shut up for 2 periods a year.
