330m on a young goat a couple of weekends ago.
I have been following this thread, unsure if I wanted to weigh in on the conversation, but now I think I will. I think that testing ones ability to shoot at range is something that you develop as time goes on, especially if you get into alpine when it can at times become a necessity if you want to pursue a trophy. Walking for a week to take one shot encourages one to remove as many variables as possible and it is a good tool to have in your toolbox if the chance presents itself.
Nonetheless, if it is about getting meat in the freezer I tend to agree that generally you can get away with a rifle that is capable out to 300m most of the time. Hence why flat shooting cartridges with modest projectile weights like the .270win have been so popular as a do-it-all rifle for so many years.
I have found myself carrying belted magnums with big scopes for fun on numerous occasions and often not getting the chance to use them for excessively long shots... but man is it fun when the chance presents itself and you confidently put an animal on deck at decent range, especially after the countless rounds you put in practicing and hours fine-tuning your reloads!
