Yeah he always seems like a top bloke. As a newbie I welcome his input to some of my dumb questions.

Argy bargy aside, the topic is valid. It wasn't all that many years ago that it was a rare occurrence to find a factory rifle that truely shot MOA, and indeed in the earlyish issues of rod and rifle magazine, you can see Graham Henry introduce the target shooting concept of MOA to the average shooter. Lately I was interested that Jim from the Backfire channel challenged his followers to produce a true MOA group from a factory rifle with factory ammo on the principle that they couldn't.
Yes its absolutely correct that we should all strive to get the best from our gear, and know how to do so. But if the rifle you have is the one you can afford, and it shoots 2 inch groups, then you do still have a 300 yard/meter rifle if a long shot presents. One that will allow you to do so with a couple of inches to spare all round on a red deer size animal.
Now Im in a position where I could recently go out and spend 5 grand on a rifle and scope set up that offers me incredible precision for the hunting I wish to do. The last 4 animals I have shot with it though were a boar at 30 meters, a fallow at 70, a red spiker at 50 and a chamois 2 days ago at 100. If I had my old rifle that shot 2 inch groups then they would still be dead.

    Anyway @Gibo started it.

I wasn't trying to be nasty, I was just pointing out he seems to have a distaste for longer range hunting and often came across with a she'll be right attitude toward accuracy. That's obviously his opinion but we don't all have to share it.

Most modern bolt actions will do MOA with the right ammo, trick is finding the factory it shoots best with. My Ruger Scout does sub MoA with rem corlokt but 1.5ish with Super X. My Howa 30 06 does sub MoA with Super X but 2MoA with corlokt.
Main rule is if you don't think you can knock it over at whatever distance just get closer.
Last deer was just behind the shoulder, last rabbit was a fuck up and just below the neck. Last goat was too long ago to remember coz BOP.

I remember about 20 years ago a guy coming through the door of the hut on the ruahine tops. This was when I probably only had about 5 years hunting experience under my belt and most of that was bush stalking the haurangi fp.

He had this old wooded pump action rifle in some generic caliber and it certainly didn't look pretty. I had recently bought a reasonable stainless/synthetic rifle and thought I was pretty cool. He told me his rifle shot around 2 inch groups at 100 yards. My new rifle was doing around 1 inch groups and I almost felt sorry for him carrying around this old thing.

Ironically the more I spoke with him the more I realized not only was he a very capable hunter with his old rifle, but I left actually feeling quite envious of him. He just had this happiness about himself that I didn't have. This encounter changed the way I thought about hunting forever.

    Bring back MD!

I do have a mountain rifle that will group sub moa. But I am always cogniscient that it is a tool, and practice, repitition and acceptable hunting accuracy are required to secure animals.

Someone said it earlier, its not the rifle! I've found regular dry firing practice a real help.

    Good to hear Dan..

Have just looked at Micky Duck's two polls. They ask where is POA on body, and what was last range for deer? I cannot see a problem with either poll.

Dan, Gimp et al - there is no serious issue here. May I offer an experienced manager and veteran site member piece of advice for you - don't sweat the unimportant stuff, and don't fuss over differences of opinion - even from yours. Healthy. Its a good site - respect the differences that arise. Remember to manage with a light hand..

Yes bring old Micky back pronto... He's a good bloke and has contributed plenty to this very good site over many years.

    Thankyou Mike (mudz)

On the off chance I might one day be in the mood to spend that sort of money, what was the rig you bought? (Maybe a separate thread for "$5k plus Rigs" ...ok, I'll start the thread...) Cheers
I know a lot but it seems less every day...

…..just like some of us don’t share a taste for LR hunting…. Personally I don’t lose sleep about it, I just don’t participate in it.

There is at least one post by MD deleted. So some context is missing.
Revealing personal information about another member or alluding to it is bad form. To do it about a mod is double risky.
Being a bit naughty doesn't make a good person like MD a bad person, but rules are rules. Im sure he gets that.
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.
