Went for a quick pre-brecky scoot round some bush and tussock country yesterday morning at dawn. Was surprised to see seven deer in total, all stags. Walked up behind a feeding spiker at about 35 metres and then closed in to about 150 on two young stags - a 6 and a very promising wide 8.
An odd moan at dawn but no roars, stags that are not holding hinds all out feeding.
A mate has just come back from Lake Sumner and said same thing - no roars, stags feeding

Camped out last night. Hinds and fawns now seen separate to stags. I am guessing that because Canterbury has had such an exceptional summer for grass growth, resulting in hinds maintaining excellent body condition, this has resulted in an early estrus cycle and compressed mating / rut period. The Roar here is over

I was just out with the dog doing some training this afternoon. The property is neighboring a red deer farm. 3.30pm and I heard a couple roars coming from next door.... has this cold snap brought on another round?
