Bit of a chill in the mornings now.... perhaps stags are starting to think about the roar

    Greetings all,
There are going to be some very grumpy hunters in Hawkes bay this year. We have had a cracker season for the growth of feed so the deer should be in good nick but the road access to the Kawekas from where I sit is dicey and it is likely to be April before most is restored. What the bush and tracks are like is anybody's guess. The Taupo Road is still closed so my first trip to the Taupo Range will have to wait as well, the 400 km trip via Palmerston North does not appeal. We rather take for granted the ease of travel in NZ at least in normal times. My first recollection of the Taupo road was in the late 1950's. It was a goat track and took, from memory, something north of 5 hours. People boasted of 4 hour trips but others just shook their heads. I still remember the endless corners and rutted gravel surface. We don't know how lucky we are.
    GPM.

There’s a lot of Sika stag activity from may to august, no need to panic yet

Rissington bridge should be done within two weeks and then you can get at Ferny ridge, lotkow and hot springs, there’s a lifetime of hunting with just those access points

Heard a roar come out of the bush on my mates place on Saturday evening. Just one roar, no reply to my imitation.

Was in the tops over the weekend, saw a older stag thrashing about, and a sad six pointer one let out a few roars. Six pointer is now at butchers.

No recon done, have been a bit busy fixing stuff on the farm here in Hawkes Bay.
The Roar has begun here, heard a few from the porch last night. which was confirmed by a mate who was here looking for a venison last night.

First wallow I have seen getting used. Seems late as it was happening in February last year. No roaring heard yet.

Too busy fishing and work but been out once and no good. But i did see signs of a stag and using a wallow for awhile .
Still, my mate heard stags roaring/moaning in two different areas around here in the last couple of days so its starting, which is about a week early than normal.
