Just to give this some context, she is the off sider of Hera Cook, well known anti gun crusader. You might recall old Hera going a bit crazy at the select committee during the buy back debacle when her extremist and unsubstantiated views were challenged. See the profiles here: https://www.otago.ac.nz/news/news/otago708948.html
The point being this isn’t necessarily about hunting, probably more an attack on one of the accepted reasons put forward for people having having firearms as they continue their anti gun crusade. They are now just trying to leverage an environmental angle to support their cause. If there is nothing to hunt you don’t need a firearm.
It smacks of academic elitism as it completely overlooks the main reason a large majority of people hunt, to provide food. Like a number of do gooding academics they would rather have people rely on the welfare state than provide for themselves.
Thanks for posting that article @Mark M. Note the final sentence in reference to the gun lobby:
“In fact, there is now substantial research showing that fewer guns make a society safer, as our factsheet shows”
Yet since the firearms reforms, gun violence has escalated terribly and has never been this bad. I wonder how Comrades Russell and Cook go with explaining that?
Her bias shows with the (92% of firearm owners are male) comment tossed in. Just another usefull idiot. Hates the "Old Pale stale white male patirarchy" but doesn't realise the "old Pale stale white female matriarchy" doesn't offer any viable alternative. Her kind should have been left in the early to mid 70's along with Kumbayah singing hippies.
Never heard of the one-eyed non-hunting woman before part reading that article. (Couldn’t be naffed reading it in its entirety)
But as somebody pointed out, we had grazing animals before the introduced ones arrived.
‘Many of my bullets have died in vain’
There was a comment (I haven't fact checked it) that she's also a close relation of someone who helped write the new laws, as well as being on the board of gun-grabbers. Really what this is, is an attempt to further alienate hunters in order to attack firearms ownership. They have figured out they can start a "legitimate use" wedge, then keep driving it on whatever topic they think of. They nailed the competitive shooting community, now they're after the hunting community by saying the hunting community is causing climate change. You and I know that's stupid, but she just needs to win over the uneducated voters to kill our way of life.
Ultimately she's comfortable saying this publicly because this' part of a larger shift in society where the general public has no exposure to firearms or hunting, so are easily convinced of anything they're told. We as a community are terrible at getting our message out to non-hunters, but that's what we need to do if we want to survive. Chur Bay's school hunting program and club ( https://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co....ng-club-74684/ ) and NZDA's learn to hunt program are great examples of that. We however need to make sure that people local to these programs but outside the hunting and shooting community know they're happening, and expand our offerings so there's access at hand for those with no direct links into the community. We certainly can't ignore this and say "it'll never happen to me" or allow ourselves to be divided by saying "you don't need that to hunt" or "that's not hunting"... end of the day the anti-gun folks see all of us as evil, so division and narrow minded infighting only hurts you and benefits the gun-grabbers.
