Thread: Hunter trapped by 1 ton boulder

Be careful out there, a hunter pulled a 1 ton boulder down on himself crushing his leg and trapping him. Luckily they had a PLB, alpine rescue and fire brigade chopperd in to move boulder with hydraulic rams.

very unusual accident,that is for sure.VERY lucky they had a PLB.

Crush syndrome also a risk after that long trapped?

I was thinking about that exact sort of scenario on Saturday when I crossed a couple of big boulder fields.

Easy to imagine happening to yourself.

I wondercif they had an inreach or mobile coverage to explain so they brought the hydraulic equipment first trip. Maybe a couple of car jacks would have been enough ?

Lucky they had a PLB and didn't have to resort to using a swiss army knife. re movie "127 hours"

Yeah, I need to stop putting off getting a PLB.

After the Kaikoura earthquake there was a lot of big loose rocks that you needed to negotiate around/ over on the creeks, riverbeds slips and gorges . My dog pushed over a small 100kg rock onto my leg knee height trapped me for 5min. But the worst 2 was the random rock slides in the gorges and a 500kg rock land between me and the dog. I was thinking of getting a helmet but it's not going to save me from a decent size rock hitting me. I always carry a inreach and a PLB just in case.

Pretty much still in Queenstown up Wye creek I'd say they would have had cellphone coverage

the paramedics got there and stabilized patient...and THEN pilot/pilots went and got firecrew with equipment according to article.....

My dog dislodged a log about 6ft long by 2ft round above and 10ft behind me one day ,took me out just below the knees,lucky it didn’t get a lot of time to build up speed..backpack saved me from cracking my head..look on the dogs face was priceless..

You can hire them for not much from a lot of places, in case you didn't want to drop the $400..

I'd drop the $400 but would need two.
Wife would keep taking it trail running or adventure racing.

assumably you at home when wifey is off doing this stuff..so 1 will do for now LOL.
you buy her one..and she buys you one and that way you dont feel bad about forking out $$$$ as its a gift for your nearest and dearest.

I've got one with an expired battery if you want it. Might be cheaper to buy a new battery for it than buying a whole unit new ?
