Walk through to Smith's shelter and hunt up the river round the fringes night and evening.
Watch out for people and be safe.
thanks for your reply, but i don't think i am allowed to shoot after sunset.
You are correct. @Tahr means right at the change of light, the first few minutes of light in the morning and last light in the evening is the best time to see an animal out.
The more hunting pressure an area gets (how often people hunt there) will result in the animals staying out of sight longer, often only coming out in the last 5minutes of the day and often returning to the bush right on or before first light. If you are bush hunting then time of day makes little difference in my experience.
In areas where the animals are not bothered by hunters often (generally private land or very remote areas) the animals can be found out and about hours before sunset and well into the morning, sometimes all day depending on the time of year and location.

Hey there if you are new to hunting and/wellington the best advice I can give is join Hutt valley deerstalkers and do the HUNTS course. You will learn heaps meet some potential hunting buddies and get a few ideas about where to hunt.
Go to the Haurangis and sneak around in the bush. You'll get onto animals once you have been there a few times.
Have a talk to Brock at Hunting and Fishing Lower Hutt. He hunts a lot locally and may be able to point you in the right direction.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.
Kaitoke and Pakuratahi get a complete pasting by cullers and poison drops, Not worth the walk. Akatarawa public land is average unless you know the area really well. Tahr has given a good start point, I hunt that area on a very regular basis and my success rate is pretty high.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
When I lived in Wainui I used to hunt catchpool and tge blocks around wainui regularly with success.
I would say it did take me a year to find the spots within these areas but once I did the deer are there. Have even shot one on five mile loop 20yrds off the track.
Goats are kept well under control in this area by cullers but there are heaps of pigs in the upper reaches of the Orongorongo river and Wainui river.
Mt Matthews is a good walk too with deer on the seaward side. Bush is tight as fck tho on true left of the Orongorongo river.

is the hunting permit required?
DOC permit required for catchpool/Orongorongo as is part of Rimutaka FP.
GRWC for any other permits around Belmont, Eastbourne and Wainui.
Wainui water catchment is balloted see GRWC web for permits in these areas.

er hang on no shooting in the catchpool valley or the Orongorongo river bed, I believe??
Windywelly.....Presumerly you are new to hunting ?........Perhaps someone might take you to spot "x"......Other than that, just do whats been suggested on here.....It would be interesting to know the exact places around Wellington where the wild red deer roar / live ?....The obviousily way to find out is simply go for a walk without a firearm during the roar and hear them, maybe ?
