I have personally seen or know of 5 taken out of Thompson's Track (Waikato side) in the last 10 days, so there are a few gone making that "there are no deer in the Kaimai's true"

Awesome mate, do you know if there's stags roaring up there? I spooked something yesterday afternoon pretty close to tommys track, but didn't get a chance to see what it was!

I don't know about them roaring but they will be rooting every hind they can find, getting them roaring is up to your ability with the horn.

Part of the problem these days is the electronic roaring gadgets put out the real thing in sound.

The deer are in decent numbers between Waiorongomai and SH29, numbers start getting a bit lower north of there.

Pick an access point and keep going back until you learn the area. A lot of the Kaimais are hard hunting - tight 2nd-gen bush, but there are plenty of deer there.

I shot my first deer there a decade ago, just north of Te Rereatukahia hut, bang on midday.

I went in for the morning last Sunday, and roared one in an hour after leaving the car, at around 9am.
