    Hunting near Alexandra

    Hey guys
Yes I know I should have a proper look on the doc site.... Quick glance shows the old man range and the Hawkdun area

Looks like I will have a few days spare at the start of November and wondering where to go to fill in some time. Am happy to put in some leg work (have tent and shouldn't be to cold in November) and have a 4wd (it's still factory so don't want to go exploring to far) would be happy to see a few animals been a while since I've seen a chamoai.... Would be happy just to be shooting goats or hares since they don't exist on the island, something bigger would be a bonus.

Most of the good areas are private land but there is still game in the DOC blocks. The high ground on the Old Man range will have plenty of boggy areas and patches of snow and may well still be impassable to vehicles at present. Most of the game is closer to the private boundaries anyway. There are plenty of goats but subject to landowner permission. Many runholders will not let 4WD's on their tracks at present as the ground is wet and easily cut up.

Cheers gundoc, the truck on the mainland isn't set up for wet stuff, still to new and shiny..... Though it has some nice pinstripes courtesy of the last goat mission in matogouri and rosehip country

Not surprised the grounds wet up there, anywhere that isn't a hard road surface on the island has been a bog for the last few months

The roads heading up the hill to the doc land are ok, but get pretty scruffy once in (boggy, rutty, generally pretty shit).
The deer are sporadic, but are around.
Hawkduns tends to get smashed by numptys, choppers etc, so the deer (and pigs) can be difficult to find. West branch follows the river so, very slow bumpy, multiple crossings (which can get a little hairy as it's snowmelt season)(don't ask me how I know).
All that said, a keen man will find something to entertain himself.

Well this week fell to pieces. Couldn't get to one of my courses so instead of a week long trip worth bringing a rifle it's turned into a hurried 2 night no spare time trip.... Such is life
