With mercury being so heavy yet still a liquid it would be a similar effect to powdered steel disintegrating projectiles like varmint grenade I could imagine

Nope it would have no effect and would be a hilarious poisonous waste of time!
-it can't carry any more energy than the bullet
-it won't have much mass or penetrate well
-it will do fuck all
surely it would move the centre of gravity of the projectile, potentially causing a tumbling effect after leaving the barrel (depending on the amount of mercury) also being a liquid as the primer fires and the main charge starts the projectile moving it will resist moving and flow to fill the rear of the hole made for it, depending on the side wall thickness it may just push the projectile walls out till the tip opens up completely.
Just my thoughts on an extremely expensive way to make a hollow point.
Why not go the whole hog?
That'll blow the fucker up good n proper
Na it will poke a hole threw and blow up the bank behind!
"Hunting and fishing" fucking over licenced firearms owners since ages ago.
308Win One chambering to rule them all.
Ok my last post was a joke but are flechettes illegal? I assume so
Would it be possible to cast one of these
into a lead bullet with only the arrowhead sticking out or am I pissing in the wind/ overthinking it?
Its the same concept, regardless of the relative compositions. The mercury sits in the back of the pill during flight storing potential energy and at the same time adding to the mass and kinetic energy of the pill. On rapid deceleration of the pill, the mercurys' potential energy is converted to kinetic energy as it is free to move across the space between it and the inside of the head of the pill and provide a force against it. It's reasonable to expect that the mercury can assist in the expansion or deformation of the projectile. It maybe of limited effect or usefulness but it's certainly not stupid.
10MRT shooters do it 60 times, in two directions and at two speeds.
The mass of any mercury in the bullet is going to be much less than the actual mass of the bullet, it's going to carry little energy and penetrate little and not do much damage compared to "an actual decent hollowpoint" which don't need any help to expand anyway
Could you not use the 208 amax ?, I'm pretty sure they have a thinner jacket than the SMK. If you were prepared to muck about a bit you could remove the plastic tip and open up the Meplat a bit.
