Thread: Hutt etiquette

If its really late at night sneak up on the hut, grab a stick and run it along the corrugated iron about head high to the top bunks. This can sound a bit like a machine gun. Then run round and leap through the door brandishing your rifle and shouting 'Hit the deck'

Then go and fly camp and be gone before daylight in the morning.

Come back for breakfast, hut empty, move in.

I sling the rifle walking in, probably the least threatening way to carry it

The only time I have had to deal with tramper types in a hut(cos i was in a popular tramper hut) I hung my unloaded rifle on the coat rack outside under my coat while I got a feed on and dryed out and warmed up by the fire.
Buttered them up with some venison salami and jerky then said i would bring my rifle inside to clean it explaining it was unloaded of course.
Cleaned and hung back outside and slept with the bolt.
While everyone loved the salami and one of them was interested in my rifle and hunting I could tell one of the others was not comfortable with the rifle.
Not my place to try and change her so I hopefully caused her the minimum amount of discomfort possible and maybe desensitised her a bit?
Very friendly once rifle back outside.
Tho i don't think any of them liked me for getting up at 3 in the morning no matter how quiet I tried to be

My rifle goes into hut bolt out and sleeps in my sleeping bag away from guests or hosts and they don't know that it is ready when I want it. Bloody military have got things to answer for.

Yeah I have had some annoying people to share huts with. As the others say remove your bolt and ammo, be nice to them ect. Sometimes it works and you make friends or atleast teach people not to hate hunters. If this fails and you really want to annoy them, buy an MSR cooker and run it on Diesel! Sounds like a F16 jet and smells like buss exhaust! Guaranteed to boil water and tempers in record time...

While I tend to avoid popular huts (a period of working for doc killed the joy of talking to other users) I carry a light cycling "cafe lock" made by bbb that I put thru the action and use to lock to a bunk or whatever.
The bolt never leaves me, even for a 3am toilet trip.

Never had a gun related issue with other hut users other than the odd dirty look-normally from male tourists.

Only time I've had a firearm in a public hut was a few weeks ago. Just the same procedure as any other hut for me. Empty rifle and remove bolt away from the hut. Have been in huts before as a tramper and had hunters come in and they'd followed the same procedure. Main thing is to keep it as low key as possible.

And if you don't happen to be carrying a granade, a Molotov Cocktail is a good option, as long as you don't light it, 'cause that would just be silly.

I know for a fact that a bloke got charged after he left his rifle unattended in a hut while he buggered off to go fishing. No idea if the bolt was in it or not or what the charge was. Carrying a cable lock is a sensible thing to do.

One thing that amuses/slightly annoys me now days is the 60-100 dollar? fire exit sign over the only door in the hut.

Sign in North Arm hut read something like this "If you leave the gas on you will wake up dead" It was made of that formica stuff that you engrave through to highlight the colour beneath.

The signs are a lot cheeper than that, but the cost of getting it there installed in some cases was staggering!
I probably put thirty of those signs up. We choppered in to do some of them!!!

As in theory guys are paid accomodation the fire service made doc comply after looking the others way for a long time.

I wasn't going to mention the chopper rides

As far as hut etiquette goes, washing your socks or jocks in the hut billy is a no no

Yep bolt removed and ammo as well. I learnt a lesson last time and that is to not lean the rifle against the wall near the end of the bed. I forget how tall I am and stretched out a wee bit too much and knocked it over in the dead of the night which gave an almighty thud. Gave everyone in the hut including myself a wee fright and apologized immediately, but they were all good buggers about it. Lay your rifle down or swing it over something secure is my advice.

I have told 2 hunters to remove bolt at hut door step before, they didn't like that

I also offer my bunk to those that come into a hut if none are free.
