dogs are legal on most doc administered land...thermals ARENT.

Apart from bailing and holding the advantages of using thermal and dog are pretty much the same. I don't use either but do find it funny that using a dogs superior hearing and smell to help you is a good thing but using a thermal to check whether its worthwhile climbing down into a supplejack choked gully is bad.

you walk into shop and spend $$$$$ to walk out with thermal

you spend hours,days,months years even forming bond and training a dog to do the job even half right..
and the thermal usage being talked about is same as spotlighting ...roadside,mostly not even out of vechile find and shoot..walk over and recover animal and go home...its not hunting its harvesting...there is little skill involved...
oh and dog knowing animal there is only 10% of battle
dog has to tell you
dog has to lead you
you have to believe dog
you have to keep dog calm and quiet
you both still have to out wit animal on its terms on its home ground
thermal has its place for pest control on private land...its a tool...and a very effective tool...but its not hunting.

to compare it to using indicating dog is absurd

Nothing bothers me more than mass culling by the government/DOC.

That depends entirely how it is being used Micky.
It can be used and is very effective to watch a face or gullys in conjunction with binos in daylight, however it seems that has now been made illegal other than on private property.

That said the majority (but not all) of thermal owners I know use them as you describe.

I do not use nor necessarily advocate the use of thermals but I do find it amusing that DOC ban them on public land during the hours of daylight. Nighttime I understand as it’s a safety thing. Correct me if I am wrong but DOC support the shooting and culling of big game on public land, yet here they have banned equipment that would enable hunters to do so far more effectively in the daylight and better achieve the general outcomes that DOC desire. Like I said, i’m not advocating it, I just find DOCs contradicting standpoints amusing.

they also stop you flying into areas with high animal numbers...and they cull aerially animals in easy to reach areas...logic and DOC dont belong in the same sentence .

As per the original post. YES , illegal hunting pisses me off. Specially when it happens on my doorstep

Why are thermals a safety issue at night if you can't shoot until daylight anyway? Just saying.

because people are people and will use spotlight or thermal or whatever to actually shoot at night.... the hut possum I can condone...deer across gully,not so much but are realistic enough to know it will happen...a lot of us will have shot deer on side of track...thats different to TARGETING deer with spotlight/thermal etc

Thermal Imagers on Department of Conservation managed land.
Using thermal imagers on D.O.C. managed land is great for safe target identification, or spotting game day and night. However, shooting at night is disallowed, so if using night vision or thermal imaging at night, intent not to hunt must be proven. An empty rifle chamber and magazine is sufficient proof at night, or better still, leave the rifle behind when spotting game.

Fact. yes, using spotlights, torches, any light source and thermals, heat seeking devices etc hunting at night is banned
2 Using any of these devices etc while not hunting is ok. DOc cant stop you walking a DOC track at night using a torch, spotlight searching for animals etc to record numbers etc if you without a firearm or anything to havest a animal with.
It wont hold up in court.......but do you want the hassle when they accuse you but intend to hunt must be proven......just saying
