i do believe this is true. On the permit its relating to night but its not made totally clear but i have no doubt its fine during daylight.
Secondly its totally fine to use thermal, night vision, spotlights, whatever during darkness as well as long as you not hunting.. The hunting permit only relates to hunting, not hunting you dont have a permit
and theres nothing written anywhere, including in law that states you , as a person of the general public cant access DOC land during darkness and use such equipment.
The fact is you can, as long as you not hunting and any intend to hunt end of
Thats not how I read it. On the not allowed list under section 4 on the permit shown on page 2, there is a separate line that states Spotlights, thermal and infa-red is not allowed to be use for hunting...it does not state at either night or day. Now of course it is more common to use these items at night, but it does not say that. it just says you cannot use them. So if you have a themal on your belt during the day when you are out hunting I would say that is a No-No according to the permit.
Heres the thing. Clearly thermal and night vision, infa-red was added to the line that had spotlights, torches etc when they became avaiable to be used.
Clearly its meant for night, even thou its not black and white and stated but common logic would say that. You not going to use a spotlight during the day, or nightvision and the powers that be prob
thought you not really going to use thermal during the day either but clearly you can.
Considering its not stated its banned during daylight, and the whole clause in that line is for safety....ie id target etc esp during darkness i think you find one of two things.
1 Nobody, including a DOC person will give a crap if you using a thermal during daylight hours .
2 And even if in the unlikely event that one did its highly unlikely you going to be taken to court and if you did you prob win.
And on another note to just confirm, yukon who sell the thermals wrote to DOC, and have the letter on their website stating basicly the use of them in daylight is fine, and at night is fine as well as long as at night you not hunting with them or ihave the intend to hunt during darkness.
So, common sense and information stated on thermal selling websites its totally fine to use during daylight and lets face it,considering the non action in trying to police or catch people illegally hunting during darkness in DOC
do you really believe they going to worry about you during daylight as long as you have a permit, i think not
Plus if i went into DOC land during the day and using a thermal, im not using the thermal to hunt, but to spot game on a face etc. After spotting the game, the thermal is put away
and i then stalk that game i now know thats there. In a court of law, you allowed to use a thermal to spot game, and after im clearly not using that thermal to hunt so using one during daylight will always hold up in court.
Toitally different at night as hunting after daylight is forbidden, totally different so dont worry about not using a thermal during daylight

Morals ah, they really get in the road sometimes, especially as you get older.
1. Who do you make a complaint to.
2. Is there a chance they will find out you made the complaint (are they friends or have a connection to who you are complaining to). We all know how safe our data and information is these days. Hell, I was involved in a car accident last year where the guy did a runner, 3 days later he rang me on my mobile and asked if I knew how much it was going to cost for the damage to my car. How he got my mobile, I have no idea, it wasnt from the cops, the cops didnt want to know who he was even though I had his name, photo, and details from his facebook page, they didnt care he hit my car, hit another car (mercedes) when fleeing the accident and did a runner from the scene. Wouldnt even take his details down.
3. If they do find out, as they are irresponsible and not law abiding people, is there a chance they might retaliate against you or those around you.
We dont need cowboys with guns in our hobby/sport/profession, it gets people killed, and hurts our way of life.
Choice is yours, do nothing, confront them and tell them to pull their head in, or inform the authorities.
Hard choice. But you know, they say the only good cops are the ones who have dobbed in the bad cops, and maybe its time gun owners had the same approach.
Good luck.
GUN CONTROL IS A TIGHT 5-SHOT GROUP.
Yes, its a hard choice but from how much of it is going on around here claerly the police dont give a toss. So many areas are being hunted at night its a joke.
Where i went on weekend i was informed by someone that there mate was hunting there with a thermal week before, and saw a number of deer at 1am in the morning there.
I heard of other people that hunt the main highway at night and average 3 to 4 deer a night which they selling.
Then theres the forestry guys hunting the forsts without permits during the week and using thermals etc.
Risking their jobs for a deer but this sort of thing has increased big time over the last year or two after the cool of period after the camper was shot in a DOC campsite and they cracked down on spotlighters.
scared the crap out of a lot of them now its back to the old ways.... illegal hunting back in force big time
Out
Well where i hunt, 2 of my spots actually the doc rangers spotlight the place. The 1 place they use the DOC ute to spotlight, sometimes a private vehicle, they spotlight the private pine block nearby too.
And the other place the doc guys with a side by side doing possum lines spotlight the place off the side by side.
Seen them both places a few times.
I dont bother, too many locals there poach the place. Im not local there so i just let them do their thing. I still shoot heaps of deer there, its an area where your ute can catch fire if you misbehave. They know me by now and leave me and my ute alone.
im too poor to own a thermal though lol, i just hunt daytime like we are allowed to.
Regarding thermals and night visions, there are two types: the monocular (or binoculars) type for just scanning and detecting and the scope ( or scope adaptors) for Shooting as well. I can clearly see how the scope version could be possibly a higher risk of shooting somebody( I have played a bit with the thermals of friends and I have seen their advantages and their limits), if used as the only mean of detection as well, and lacking the opportunity of properly identifying their target.
I have no problem if people were using thermal monoculars responsibly to detect their deer during daylight and then carry on doing their normal stalking. Same if used by Bowhunters in that way . Yes it gives them an edge over the guy who don't use them but so is a dog .
And I am not complaining about people using indicating dogs.
I can understand the frustration of some so see their favorite area being cleaned up by poachers or selfish hunters not following the rules on general public. I have a similar frustration when I meet hunters during the roar , who shoot deer after deer in a valley, and let the small trophies and the meat rot ( if they even bother to cut the back steaks)in place because they have not shot yet that 12 or 14 pointers , or they want to brag about how many stags they "smashed" during their hunting week.
But from what I understand, we have a lot of deer out there at the moment and not enough hunters spending enough time out there to knock the numbers down.
We all know how it's ending : 1080 of our favourite spots on regular basis.
How many of you report to doc the number of deer they harvested on their quarterly permit?
How many people out there go and hunt with out a doc permit?
I think at this stage we need to reduce the deer population in some areas seriously if we don't want doc to do it for us.
And as I said somewhere else, I would not be against some new type of hunting or culling permit allowing people to legally spotlight certain blocks to reduce the numbers.
Talking about spotlighting, I wonder if doc over the years have not closed their eyes on the subject as they wanted deer number reduced anyway one way or another . And their was a big wake up when that young lady got shot in the head a few years back while brushing her teeth which. Changed their attitude on the matter.
As to the original question, yes illegal hunting and for that matter, anything else that brings our fraternity into disrepute pisses me off.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
+1
Illegal shooting not only concerns me, it scares the shit out of me.
I have had a number of incidents where illegal shooting by others has put my safety at risk, on both public and private land, and on one of those occasions I was actually hunting with a DOC Ranger.
For that reason, I no longer hunt on public land.
Plenty dont get a permit for hunting on DoC land. Plenty use spotlights, thermals, shoot from vehicles whether allowed or not. Drone use is another thing that pisses me off. Go to any popular tramping area and there is a good chance that a drone will be or has been buzzing around. DoC, police dont care or cant be bothered, those breaking the rules just think they are not doing any harm. Its just 1 drone, thermal, spotlight whats the problem. I dont have a problem with thermal use as long as they are not hunting during darkness.
well if you go visit some " dirty girls" and come away scratching your pubes...you will find answer soon enough LOL
It pisses me right off !!!!
Here's a good one for you all.....
I rolled into a hut a few weeks back with my 13year old son, there were a couple of young 'hunters' from Nelson just packing up and a tramper in residence.
My young fella asks the 'hunters' if they have seen any deer. "Yea heaps, about 6 i think" was the reply. Given the area I think.....shit that's pretty good.
They carry on packing and I notice a thermal and a couple of spotlights, so does my boy.
We then went outside and my boy says to me.." i don't want to jump to any conclusions but did you see that thermal and spotlights?"
Yep i did, so decide to ask them a question....
"Those deer you seen, they didn't happen to be at night did they?"
"Shit yea bro, I've never actually shot a deer in the daytime"! Was the reply.
Unfucking believable !!! No private land for miles only national park !!!
Turns out from talking to the tramper who returned later in the day that they never actually went hunting in the day only at night !!
I find this sort of shit sooooo disappointing!!
