No I genuinely believe that this argument has no substance... A thermal has less capacity than a dog.

I genuinely believe that the application of a dog to indicate, track and find is an unfair advantage.

So are firearms, knives helicopter bows, vehicles or horses, binoculars or advanced levels of fitness.

I genuinely believe that people who continuously bring up a subjective viewpoint of what is or isn't ethical, while actively using technological advantage in other areas to hunt animals; are simply logically inconsistent. Or to speak plainly - are just hypocrites.

The point of hunting is to meet your own level of ethical standard & expectation, not to continually try and impose personal standards on others.

To try doing that while you undoubtably use technological advantage in other areas makes this argument invalid.

I care if people use them on public land because it’s a safety issue, like spotlighting. DOC don’t care if it gives you an advantage over the animals, the potential for someone to get killed because of failure to identify the target is why they aren’t allowed.

I’m all for using thermal scope in the right place and time, I would buy a set tomorrow if I didn’t have a dog or if I had a job that required one.

But there are some guys that are going to f##k it all up for everyone in Marlborough that are pouching shooting deer from boats on peoples water front batches in the sounds, and know of 3 other guys shooting the Molesworth and St James Rds, Leatham, Nelson Lakes, some forestry’s and shooting the main roads in the Marlborough sounds selling the meat. Some locals have cought theses guys but are scared or the repercussions.

A hand held thermal only provides an indicator than an animal may be in the area similar to an indicating hunting dog. Unless the animal is standing out like dogs bollocks in front of you binoculars are still required to positively identify your target and confirm that the firing zone is safe. Hardly a safety issue.

A thermal scope mounted to a rifle is another story and as such it's important to separate the two.

You're conflating the tool with the usage of the tool. You are making the same mistake as those braindead anti firearms people who assume that the tool is the problem and not the people using it.

What those people are doing is simply illegal, irrespective of the tool being used to do it.

Focus on the actions, not the instrument which can be used for either useful legal activity or illegal activity.

Yip this argument has come up before, should we go back to muskets/open sights? Horses instead of 4WD, Look at the advancement in clothing, tents, camp gear & firearms. Thermals are just another advancement for those that want to use them, as Sidney says it’s who is using them and how.
Shut up, get out & start pushing!

As for safety, identifing yr target at 300yds.In low light man dressed in brownish greenish camo standing on the edge the bush and a deer standing on the edge of the bush in low ligth.A thermal hand held will bet a good set binos hands down for identifing both targets in last light.
More people have been shot out hunting in broad bloody day light than at night.Maybe hunters should be using binos and thermals hand helds more to identifing their targets better in the day time.
As for thermals,no different to recreational fishing boats using fish finders looking for their fish deep down in the lakes, just legal.

Meh, who cares... Technology changes, get over it.

Personally, I can't justify the cost of thermal kit, but if I could, I'd absolutely buy and use it.

I don't have a thermal, and never used one for hunting. I still get enough deer. There will always be some that use them, even on doc land illegal or not, but I would rather that than choppers shooting them to rot where they fell. Or the green rain.

They used to be legal during daylight hours, but then DOC changed the wording on the permit conditions.
