I guess the problem arises when the 80%ers want to do what the 20%ers do. Unfortunately it becomes the animals problem and no one wants that.

We should be all diligent about sighting our rifles in properly and accurately. We should take careful stock of our ability and experience and adjust what we shoot, at what ranges and where we aim accordingly. Yeah?

@gimp. There was this rocking horse. Its father was a Pole and its mother was a hard case.
yes I remember watching a hunting program years ago with a bloke called Jeff something and he was sighting in a 25-06 Remington- fired one shot and it was about 2 inches high and an inch to the left at what looked to be about 100 yards - good enough he says - and I just cringed

Last two shot on Sunday. 1 neck shot, second bonus one crease shot. If hunting for processor, neck shoot for the better money. If hunting for myself, neck, crease or shoulder in that order to maximise meat recovery. If culling, anywhere that gets a good kill.

The last one I shot myself before letting the lad take over, was a headshot small fallow pricket.

163m. Tikka Super Varmint .223 Rem. 50gr Z-Max. 0.3 mil up, ~25x zoom on the Meopta. I love the FFP MRad 1 RD reticle, with the circle and illuminated cross hair - makes targeting the head a very precise business.

I shall refrain from posting a photo of the outcome as it is exceptionally gory even by head shooting standards.

My last was through the shoulder of a young red stag but it depends on a number of things as to where I target. Distance, shooting angle, how much meat I want to take and even which rifle and load I am using.

Last one was head on. Pretty much all I had visual. It did hit a tad low though. Bullet did go into neck though n turned it into a Popeye.

Best post so far. A practical point of view.

Good comment. Ditto for me, as all these things go through my head automagically and then....bang.

I don't shoot anywhere enough to be an expert on this I would have to say my normal prefer just behind front legs into lungs etc.
If it mangled the front legs that would only be annoying of I didn't have to carry it out.
Last shot was a wobbly shot of my knees braced very poorly at a neck at 120yrds in dim light.

Yep so many factors. What type of animal? am I killing it for meat or trophy? How far from road end is it? How hard do I think it will be to kill, and how badly do I want to kill it? Also how much time do I have, What kind of rest do I have, and am I feeling confident today? All are factors.

My fall back position is the shoulder.

High shoulder with aim of breaking spine most of the time.

Misjudged the size of the goat and my lower neck shot turned into a shoulder shot. Found the leg.

Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.

good shot with a 308 or 270 but having shot a lot of deer with a .222 not a good shot with that calibre risky and chance of a long follow up tracking stint without a lot of blood - shot them there and had them get up and take off - just not enough lung damage - with .222 always tried to get bullet in behind shoulder into main part of lungs - yes a little blood trailing but usually less than 50 metre

Some years back a mate and I both had .270s, I used to swear by a centre of shoulder shot that broke bone and put animals straight down. He hated that shot and aimed o put a bullet in behind the shoulder. neither of us could understand each other. Until one day we worked out that he used a lighter constructed projectile that offered massive quick expansion while I used a bonded core type projectile that often exited. Both of us had the correct placement for our given projectiles.

The problem with this shot is if you miss the spine you are in no man's land with no vitals I've seen deer get up and run after hitting the deck with this shot.
Missing the spine and too high to break the shoulder.
