    Kaweka top - too early?

I have the opportunity for a mid week hunt next week, would it be to early for the Kaweka tops do you reckon?

It will be brisk. The snow is all gone but I don't think the tutu will be out so little incentive for a small deer to be out up there. I will be heading into Kawekas Friday but low country.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

I think Chris Crosse the local chopper pilot usually says after Christmas is best. There are still deer up there but they don't move around much and are very difficult to find.

Too early for the tops to produce reliably

Seeing a few all over and around Ferny Ridge and Northern Birch at the moment, they are hammering the lupins. It must be their fav food before the spring growth starts

I was in the Kawekas last night. Highest game trails in the scree may have been about 1100m, and they were probably lonely.

Will be skiffs of snow landing there as we speak. Labour weekend is traditionally the begining of Spring hunting, but its only successful at lower altitude. The tops really come into their own around early to mid December. Xmas time is THE time to load the freezer full of fresh Sika yearlings. Yum!

My lawn spring growth is telling me presently down here near sea level that actual spring is just getting started let alone anywhere higher up the hills. Learnt many years ago at this time of the year, not to rush to high places so soon just to sit and enjoy the view and not much else happening.

Thanks for the advice, I ended up going down Clements and dropped an animal about 20 mins from the car. First deer in very very long time due to being a bit shit at hunting but I don't let that stop me.
A two night, 2.5 day hunt came to a swift but successful end.

Might see you on the tops in December or Jan.

Go up the Taupo rd near Tarawera. Huge red stag [wild] shot on side of road tonight. 2 men down for work meeting and heading home. Still in work clothes.
