    A lot of people mistake morepork calls for Kiwi in my experience.

    I saw 7 kiwi during the daytime while tramping on Stewart Island. The noise they make at night is horrendous!
    I have heard one at night in the Whareorino forest in the King Country.

    Aha, my old stamping ground - the clay saddle ! Wish I was there. Swap ya @Sideshow !

    Here are recordings of Kiwi calls.
    To be fair, you do hear a lot of interesting bird noises in the bush at night and I couldn't swear I haven't heard kiwi...
