Not quite sure how you could do that? More pork is a classic sound and kiwi seem to scream their heads off?

Just left the car at the car park.
Once you get to the top it’s fairly easy going. Takes around another 1.5 till you hit the old clay roads on the other side.
Once you pass the north south track junction there’s not a lot of sign of people.
When I’m next up there I’d walk to around the k in track to the left of the green way marker.
Your still in the native and out of the regen.

No wasn’t moreporks aka bacon birds.
Definitely kiwis, have a recording on me phone which I then played down Stewart Island a few weeks later got a reply from some across the bay.
Must have confused the crap out of his southern cousin
Yeah it's pretty flat on the top.

That's awesome! Did you see one during the day?

I saw 7 kiwi during the daytime while tramping on Stewart Island. The noise they make at night is horrendous!
I have heard one at night in the Whareorino forest in the King Country.

Do you mean in the Kaimais (No stopped calling around 4,30 as it started to get light). On the island yep, quite typical there.

Aha, my old stamping ground - the clay saddle ! Wish I was there. Swap ya @Sideshow !

Here are recordings of Kiwi calls.
To be fair, you do hear a lot of interesting bird noises in the bush at night and I couldn't swear I haven't heard kiwi...
