Thread: Let's see your DIY shooting rests for longer shots in the bush

I use a few things as the shoulders aren't good, so I adapt one thing I have is the Bi pod shooting sticks, they can take a bit of adapting.

I've seen this photo before, and I have to admit, the poor guy does not look happy that his jaxie is being used as a rifle rest. I wonder if he lost a bet.

I remember reading the old deer cullers books, think it may have been someone like Phillip Holden, they said always use the best rest you could get. Prone over anything, sitting or resting on something and then as an absolute last resort, standing. Solid advice I’ve always used in the bush, why risk screwing up the shot standing when you had the option to rest on something

Why is standing the position of last resort ? It is the position most game is shot from and the position that should be practiced most. What about standing and using a tree as a rest. Done correctly, which for a right hander means shooting off the right side of the tree with the back of the left wrist forced into the tree with pressure from the right leg locking it all together. Just as good as prone.

The frame in your pack makes for a decent rest.The longest shots I have pulled off have been off a pack or a pack frame.

Learn your trigger control and sight picture from a rest,then prone,then prone with a sling,sitting with a sling.sitting,kneeling and finally standing.But the time you can shoot well standing you will have the most of it.

I use this selfmade shooting stick.
Fully adjustable even on uneven slopes,- just push or pull one leg in or out.
Weighs only 250grams and is approx,80cm long and
slips easily in the pack.

norsk you are spot on with that one.....my K2 Hunter frame has helped me take a few longer shots....shot a heap off my knees when in wallaby country,most shots are across gully so it suits the best.
pretty good standing at 50 yards or less...but will take a rest whenever I can,had a few ballsups over the years because I didnt do so.
