I went in there, pretty hard barren country, few good faces (not hard to work out where they are on a map..) so stopped there and set up camp on the tops opposite. Had a snooze and when I woke up it was about 3pm and blazing hot, though to myself surely any animals would be looking for shade in this heat, bugger all cover about, so picked up my binos and looked at the very first shady spot I could see under some rocks on opposite face and what do you know there's a chamois sitting there. Did a big mission down hill untill I was 410yds straight across from it. The 270 did its thing and the chamois rolled down the face, only to get caught up. Spent ages trying to get up to it and the pup finally got wind of it when we were well above it, so followed him down and got to literally 10m from it but just couldn't get to it to knock it off the face without breaking my neck. So stoked the pup is doing what he's meant to do though, he was a bit frustrated also but actually made it over to it at one stage and gave it a sniff and a lick and looked back at me like "come on ya wuss!" I didn't have 4wd like him and wasn't keen on a fall from where it was.
Didn't take many photos, in photo with pup you can see cham on the face opposite side of picture. Bit disappointing but not the first time and possibly won't be the last, that's hunting in the South Island! Don't know if I'd really make the effort to go back in there, there's not a hell of a lot of (decent) country to explore and it's a bit of a mission navigating around the edge of the private to get in there, you can use the track if youre not hunting which would be far easier. There's bugger all water, I literally found one creek with water in there and it was right down the bottom of the block as I went down and up the other side to try retrieve the chamois. Good to tick it off the list though and as said super stoked Bo did all the right things. It's like a whole new dimension has opened up hunting with a young dog and seeing all your work pay off.

That’s a pretty cool shot of the dog and chamois. Some rugged country

Just a thought @Ryan_Songhurst did you try dropping a couple boulders down on to it to dislodge it ? in the hope of retrieving it further down the face ? (not much help now I'm sorry)

Nah I couldn't even get directly above it. I looked at it with my binos and you can kind of make it out in the picture, it's body is facing towards camera but it's head is twisted back around facing the other way and one of its hooks is literally hooked onto a slab of rock so it was stuck there pretty good. If there was a bit more scree down below it I would have had a go but if I slipped from where it was I would have had about 2m of scree to stop myself before a big drop straight down. 18 year old me probably would have found a way but 36 year old me values breathing and walking

Yea, something to watch with him I suppose, he was nose down and determined to get to it especially once he had actually spotted it. He sat there for a bit as I put the stop command on him because I thought he was going to try go straight across to it and knew he probably wouldn't make it that way. Then he managed to scramble onto the ridge line just above him and went down and checked it out. Let him have a sniff and a lick and praised him heaps from a distance then called him off it.

    Hi Ryan
What are you using for a pole and what is at the top to protect the fly?.
Do you find you have enough room?
    Thanks in advance.
