scotty......if you go back 10 years or so (before leds became common) guys would mount spotlight on top of scope....it fell out of favour when people realised they were pointing rifle everywhere they wanted to look,so went to using two lights.

Went in Wednesday out today with the 12yr for a dear stomp. The track to the Upper Matakuhia is open and good. There are a few pumice slips to negotiate and some log jam bridges over small creeks but the guys from Tokoroa have done a stellar job. It's about 3.5-4 hour trip. The hut is in good shape and well maintained. Blue ducks in the stream just outside the hut. Down stream to the Lower hut is not the same. It get progressively worse the farther down you go. The track is washed out about 30 mins down from the Upper hut. I'm not an experienced hunter, much less a bush stalker. We had a couple of looks around and there is a ton of sign, both dear and pigs. Tons of tracks, lots of fresh poo's and heaps of pig rooting. We had a great time but came home empty handed.

Good report, good to hear that it is still walkable and there are a few animals around. Thanks for posting.

Not that easy to find the access track local knowledge required, Time before last that I was in there a late evening walk turned into one of those hairs standing up on the back of your neck moments. Something across the creek was making a hellish ghoulish noise, unnatural and something I couldn't work out was making it bino's out spent a long time sitting hoping something would show its self
